Notre Dame Rejecting a Bowl Bid

I don't know if this was assumed, but Notre Dame is saying it will reject any bowl bid they get. I don't get it, the payout could pay 1/25th of Weis's buyout.

Re: Notre Dame Rejecting a Bowl Bid

I suggested that they would do this in a previous ND thread. I am just not surprised by this at all. ND has done this in the past. They don't typically go to lower tier bowls, they feel they are above that. Add in the fact that they just dumped their coach, they have more reason than ever to decline an invite.

I remember reading something about that...if they did, then the ones that voted to decline a bowl bid are a bunch of babies and poor sports.

Re: Notre Dame Rejecting a Bowl Bid

Considering the level of bowl, they will be lucky to break even on a trip. They don't know who the coach will be so the practice will be pointless. Better to spend that time lifting, studying, and recruiting.

Yeah, I seem to recall that I heard the players were going weigh in on the option of declining a bowl bid.

This is true. For the texas bowl, the big 12s lowest bowl, the rest of the conference bowls end up partially subsidizing the travel expenses allotment for that team (around a million total, but the bowl payout is only 750k).

Re: Notre Dame Rejecting a Bowl Bid

I don't really have a problem with it. There are a fixed number of bowls (yeah, there are probably too many, but that's a different discussion), and I assume that number is less than the eligible teams. If Notre Dame doesn't want to go, it opens up a spot for a team that really wants to be there and would actually enjoy and appreciate it.

Or any player, for that matter. If this was not a result of a vote by the players themselves, I would quit. Players want to play, and intercollegiate athletics are for the student-athletes.

Re: Notre Dame Rejecting a Bowl Bid

What is Notre Dame's bowl record in recent years? Perhaps it isn't that they only want to win in better bowls, but that they don't want to lose (again) in a lesser bowl.

You mean they do not want to do the Detroit Bowl? All the pizza you can haul away.
