    What is "Hilton Magic"

I understand the phrase came from a DMR writer and it stuck from there...

But can it be defined? What is it exactly?

Because it seems on here that we have certainly lost it....

Hilton Magic is something that existed years ago when our basketball program was relevant on a national scale.

We definitely do not have this anymore. The fans have definitely died down also.

    Re: What is "Hilton Magic"

Hilton Magic is a prophesy written in ancient Nordic runes atop Minas Tirith that was discovered an adventurer with no name, and was fulfilled when someone discovered a birthmark on Johnny Orr's buttocks that resembles the walking Cy.

    Re: What is "Hilton Magic"

Hilton Magic is the explanation for why ISU used to consistently beat more talented teams at home. It started, and to some degree ended with Johnny Orr. His style of play was conducive to getting the crowd excited, and his coaching style and personality, not to mention "Here's Johnny", did the same. His teams were routinely 10-15 points better at home minimum. And it had nothing to do with national relevance. In fact, it is what got us national relevance.

To me, it can also be defined by pure noise. No organized cheers or what have you, just 14,000 Cyclone fans yelling their collective heads off in support of their team. If you didn't leave hoarse and slightly exhausted you really weren't doing it right. One example, in the famous Okie State game when Hoiberg said the floor was shaking, my dad got so wrapped up in the moment that he had to sit down for fear he was going to pass out from yelling so long and hard.

What he said. These were the days before we had an organized crappy student section and everyone just went bonkers and did not organize neat cheers.

I was there that day, Sutton choking at the line(he was a great FT shooter) to knock off the #1 team in the country. Honestly....I just got chills reading your post.

    Re: What is "Hilton Magic"

How about the Texas game a few years ago. When a 85% free throw shooter bricked 2 free throws with less than 10 seconds left. That was the Magic I once knew. No way does that guy for UNI make that 3 pointer near the end. If he does we come back down and drill one of our own to win the game. That was the magic.

Darwyn Alexander was at the line. Mini-Sutton fouled out much earlier.

    OSU was ranked #2.

Speaking of famous shots... Remember Justus Thigpens near half-court buzzer beater against Colorado? Yeah, it was on the road but it got the road-loss monkey off our backs, and a memorable game at that.

A better question would be "what WAS Hilton Magic?"

    Re: What is "Hilton Magic"

If we're making a list, Hilton Magic is:
    - Darwin Alexander missing those two free throws for Okie State while the floor shook
    - It's Barry Steven's clutch jumper to beat Missouri
    - Lafester Rhodes going off for 54 against Iowa, and then Johnny Orr trying to slug their assistant coach
    - Fizer stuffing it in the face of Chris Mimm
    - Tim Floyd leaving his team on the floor when the other team called time outs to stop our runs to keep the crowd jacked up
    - Jake Sullivan hitting a three from the Hilton logo vs. KU
    - Boddicker missing the free throws
    - Danny Manning never winning at Iowa State
    - Stinson to Blalock to Clark for the sweet jam vs. Virginia
    - Mizzou coach Norm Stewart coming out early to watch "Here's Johnny"
    - Cap guns for Steve Stipanovich (who had shot himself in the offseason)
    - James Winters from Iowa giving me the finger from the bench during a game
    - Billy Tubbs flipping off the whole crowd after OU escaped with a win

And on and on it goes....

    Re: What is "Hilton Magic"

In my mind this is Hilton Magic

The 3 years (90-93) I went to ISU we were 21-21 in Big8 play. Our record at Hilton was 18-3. Our record on the road was 3-18. The last 2 teams were NCAA Tournament qualifiers and they were 13-1 at Hilton and 1-13 on the road in conference play.

The lone loss an inexplicable one to Nebraska in 1992. The next 2 home games that year we beat the 6th and 3rd rated teams in the country at the time. Additionally according to cylones.com during those years we beat conference teams ranked - 21,12,21,2,12,7 in Hilton. That doesn't include wins against ranked non-conference teams.
