    A Storm is Brewing

Alright, after bouncing around the many different topics on this site, I've come to the realization that many of you don't have much interest in newspapers. Well, part of my livelihood is writing for a newspaper. An occasional op-ed piece and a weekly column. The column showcases the talented poets of SE Nebraska and NE Kansas.

I'm really excited about this years football team, but I am every year. And living in Nebraska, it's been fun the last few years as shuckers have figured out that ISU isn't a pushover anymore.

So, to kick off spring practices, I'd like to share with you a poem I wrote that will show up in my column the week of the spring game. I'll probably get "beat-up" in the letters to the editor section - but I bleed for ISU!!!

    A Storm is Brewing…

    membership into this elite club
    was determined by size… speed…
strength… and the will to become the best
25 men from different parts of our nation
were selected to join forces… with veterans
    to lead a new storm

in the spring most would gather
after a long winter in bootcamp
    they’ll dress as warriors
    and bang heads…
dreaming of inflicting damage to others

    as quickly as they appeared
    they’ll once again disappear
    but the loyal storm watchers
    will continue their watch
and wait for its imminent reappearance

    three months will have passed
    before this dark storm
will be seen on the horizon
with new recruits… its strength has grown
    bigger… and… so much faster

a nation will watch in awe
    as this Cyclone storm…
buries everything that enters its home
    then it begins its travels
    Ohio and Nebraska… destroyed

    every week the winds
    get a little stronger
and word spreads throughout the plains
    that this Cyclone is stronger…
    not accepting surrender

    parts of Kansas… Missouri…
    and Texas… blown away
    more then wins and losses
a pride and never say die attitude
has returned to fans of the Cyclones

    Buffalos, Longhorns,
    Wildcats, and Jayhawks,
    be on notice…
the Cyclones stand in your way
    beware Sooners, Tigers, and Bears
    take your cover now
    watch out, Raiders, Cowboys, Aggies,
    and you Huskers, too
Chizik and company are ready to brawl

Most of us don't "dislike" newspapers, just the ones that bleed EIU and/or Nebraska sentiments. In the Des Moines Register, ISU seems to be shafted many a time, which is why many dislike it. I don't mind it personnally, but I don't like the Gazette (Cedar Rapids; 20ish miles north of IC) omittance of ISU, and the DMR's "belittling" of ISU.

As a poet myself, and a free verse poet at yourself, I'm not a fan of that particular poem. I like the idea of the poem, but in my opinion, there isn't enough of an emotion for my liking. A few lines sound kind of shaky as well. This isn't an attack on you or your poetic self, just my opinion on the piece. If you'd like to hear what I mean, or some of my advice, or see some of my own poetry, PM me. Let's go 'Clones at the NCAA's (wrestling and WBB!!!)

    "Seven minutes to glory."
