    Latest from Insight (Tony Alba)

Lake Expo Online - Top News

    Love this guy!

Alba said the Insight would take into consideration Missouri's superior record and head-to-head victory over Iowa State. But ...

"Having said that, we have an obligation to put people in the stands," he said. "What nobody wants is to have a half-empty stadium -- or half-full stadium -- so that's why traveling is extremely important."

Iowa State played in the 2000 Insight Bowl and brought a contingent of 20,000 fans to watch the Cyclones defeat Pittsburgh. But Alba was quick to point out the circumstances surrounding that matchup: It was ISU's first bowl game since 1978.

"They had a huge crowd, but you have to keep in mind they hadn't been to a bowl game in about 500 years," he said. "Obviously that's an exaggeration, but they hadn't been to a bowl game in a long, long, long time. ... Their fans were extremely hungry because they had been starved of a bowl game for so many years. We still think they travel very well, but we're doing that background work right now to see how much support there will actually be in terms of concrete numbers."

The K-State game this year is not going to help us out in this respect. We had a mediocre showing there this year. What's to say we'll bring 20,000 fans to a place 1,000 miles farther away when that's all we could get to go 3 hours away?

We'd be in deep **** when they saw
    a) our home attendance in November
    b) our showing in KC (although judging from other November games, thank God we didn't play K-State Thanksgiving weekend)

Because at the time that KState game was supposed to be a battle for last place in the Big XII North. Going to a bowl game, in warm weather, would bring a lot more people.

I don't think we will. I think a number more around 15k would be more likely. If you are one who would rather go to Insight than Texas and didn't make the trip to KC this year, you better not complain if we don't make it. And you better be at Arrowhead next year. Travel reputation has to be earned.

K-State game is irrelevant IMO. Iowa State fans are hungry for a bowl game - just look at this blog. We started our basketball season but people are excited about the football team still. This hasn't happened that often in cyclone nation.

What we average in home or road games does not matter. Our fans make it to bowl games and that's what trully matters. With both Iowa and Iowa State playing in Arizona, the bowl committees know we will draw more crowd than the state of misery.

True, but we have at least 50,000 ISU fans that live in and around Phoenix and Southern California, not to count all of the snowbird Iowa Staters that are there for the winter.

There was easily over 30000 ISU fans at the Insight Bowl, Pittsburgh didn't have anybody there.

Re: Latest from Insight (Tony Alba)

I like the numbers the artcile put up when comparing attendance. Really the only one that had merit and was apples to apples was the home attendance.

That said, I think Insight ends up picking Mizzou out of fear of punishment from the Big XII and losing its affiliation the next time the contract is up.

Pretty big gamble by the Big XII however. There better be butts in the seats if they force the bowl's hand.

I thought league rules prohibited schools from "guaranteeing" sales and revenue to bowls? That's the only way I can see a reassurance to the Insight happening (if they in fact have such concerns about Mizzou).

And also, I have to ask who has more leverage in the bowl pairings. Seems to me, the conferences want the bowl. I think a bowl will always find a team.

I wouldn't be surprised if all this hoopla was for nothing and they end up selecting Mizzou anyway. At least we found something to distract us from that UNI game.

Re: Latest from Insight (Tony Alba)

While I agree that there were a lot of reasons that attendance suffered for KC, the Insight is going to take it into consideration and it's not going to help us get picked over Missouri.

I think the Insight contract was just renewed and, in fact, Insight will have the fourth pick of teams next year and going forward. If they pick Mizzou, it'll probably just be because they think it's a better choice.

We had easily 40 million fans in Phoenix the last time we were there.

    No kidding..

I'm not holding my breath, but it sure is fun speculating. It'd be really great to go down there, and I can tell you, if we went there some of my family would probably come (who wouldn't otherwise).

Insight committee, if you see anything, know this -- us Cyclone fans realize this is a big deal for us, getting the chance to play for a bowl game like the Insight after having a positively awful season last year and 5 long ones without a bowl game. Cyclone fans would be ECSTATIC to get this selection, and would show up accordingly.
