    The Pump Fake

Is the quick pump fake taught any more? I ask this, because to me it seemed on more than one occasion last night, especially when the ball is quickly distributed into the post, that a pump fake followed by a shot would have drawn a foul. This accomplishes three things: 1) get to the foul line for points; 2) get the opposing team in foul trouble in the low block; 3) checks the aggresiveness of shot blockers.

I'm not calling out the coaching staff or the players. I'm simply wondering if others feel the same way. To my knowledge, we didn't do the pump fake once last night, when i believe there were five or six occasions where it would have drawn a shooting foul instead of a blocked shot.

As a less-talented (read: short) basketball player growing up, i was taught to use it around the basket if the defender was closing fast and couldn't stop. It got me to the foul line a lot.

When the main defender of the bucket is 7'0" and doesn't have to jump to block shots, it's less than effective. I'll give UNI some credit, their post guys defend with their feet well, and stay straight up with their arms for the most part.

    Re: The Pump Fake

Interesting that you bring this up.

I actually made a mental note this morning as I was watching highlights on SportsCenter about how many shot fakes I noticed...Dirk Nowitzki, Singler from Duke, most of the kids on the Wisconsin team, some of the kids on the Illinois team, etc.

The shot fake can be a very effective offensive weapon.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

That's one defender out of five. A pump fake is very effective for jump shooters also, to either draw fouls or to get defenders to play off them in future possessions.
Unfortunately, as Eric Heft pointed out on the post-game last night, "this team does not like contact."

    Re: The Pump Fake

Hamilton is the only true post player we have, and he uses it. He seems to be getting more effective as he matures. Otherwise, nobody else seems to go within 5 feet of the hoop, outside of an offensive rebounding opportunity or a back cut...

I was thinking about this last night too.

Absolutely...look at how a guy like Nowitzki uses it on the perimeter.

We are in for a long Big 12 season if our team "does not like contact".

It depends. If the 7'0" blocker has to move to get into position to block, especially against a quick player, it can be very effective. If he's set in position, it isn't. I thought our front-court players were quicker and more active. They need to use the pump fake to take advantage of that quickness against the plodder/grinder front court players.

    Re: The Pump Fake

This shot fake thread reminds me of Tim Floyd coaching. When he coached at ISU the team was committed to making more free throws than opponents attempted. His teams got the ball deep on the block and forced the defense to foul. I see our guys receiving post passes 10-15 feet, and they aren't doing anything with it.

If you don't think the pump fake is effective on tall people you are crazy. Against tall players is when the pump fake is absolutely essential.

Jess Settles was the best pump faker of all time. He has also been put in charge of the Marquis Gilstrp 6th year commision.
