Why don't Minnesota and ISU play?

Was watching the CR Gazette online chat today and saw this interesting post from one of their reporters

    Scott Dochterman:
Minny Asst. AD says he wants to schedule ISU every year. It's their closest BCS school. ISU has turned them down because of series with Iowa.

Would ISU fans be interested in a series with Minny?

I would definitely be in favor of it, and dropping a meaningless, and sometimes difficult, non-conference opponent (See UConn, Utah...)

Re: Why don't Minnesota and ISU play?

I would like to play Minnesota but because of the series with Iowa playing 2 Big Ten teams every year would be tough when trying to build this team up, but it looks like with teams like UConn, Utah, Navy, and Air Force coming up Minnesota isn't looking too bad.

Re: Why don't Minnesota and ISU play?

Not really. What does adding Minnesota to the schedule give us? We already have a tough enough non-conference schedule. They already have their rival in place (Wisconsin).

Put ISU in the Big 10 and make it happen!

    1) A BCS opponent to face

    2) Very close for both fan bases to travel

I think this could be a great series and turn into a great rivalry.

Re: Why don't Minnesota and ISU play?

Living in Minneapolis, I'd love a yearly series with the Gophers. But, I also would have a hard time with two Big 10 opponents every year on our non-conference schedule. Right now, we need the Kent State's of the world on our schedule.

In theory, I love it. And I'm not one to run away from a tough schedule. But if we did that, our schedule would look like this every year...

    Non-Conference game

    Big 10 game

What if Iowa/ISU is moved to the last game of the year?

Re: Why don't Minnesota and ISU play?

Absolutely not. Not very many teams play two BCS schools for nonconference games, the ones that do normally are winning 8-10 games a year.

Who is the only Big 12 Team to schedule two BCS schools for non-conference games? Baylor.

    1. Makes no difference, same schedule, different order
    2. I support that game moving to the end of the year and always have. That's not the point of this discussion.

Right, but Minnesota probably wouldn't want to make the trip to Ames in the years where they all ready have to go to Iowa, and likewise ISU wouldn't want to go to Minneapolis in the years that they go to Iowa City.

Iowa does, and has pretty regularly for the last 6-7 years.
