    Is it even economically feasible...

...to fire McDermott, at any point, before his contract expires? He's locked in for 9 years, but if this team doesn't get to the tournament, it ain't happening, and frankly it's unacceptable for ISU basketball to go 10 years without an NCAA tournament bid. This isn't a "meltdown" thread but a legitimate question to those who are more in the know regarding our financial situation. Could our athletic department afford it, or would it require a big donor stepping forth to buy out part of the contract?

Again, let me clarify, I'm not calling for his head. I'm just asking if he is our only feasible option until 2014.

I just vomited in my mouth. 9 years?? I'm guessing a large portion of the buy out would have to be paid for by a donor(s).

    Big donor. No question.

If he doesn't go this year, empty arena starts to happen, Pollard will have no choice... The only grounds Iowa had on Davis was the poor attendance, used the same on Alford.... if the fans lose faith and stop showing up it will be over...

I see it playing out one of two ways:

    1. This years team turns it around and sneaks into the NCAA tourney. Everyone is happy.
    2. We finish a few games above .500, Brackins leaves, Gilstrap is done, some random player transfers, etc. Next year is a big disaster of a season and he's fired after year 5.

Yeah, I'm taken back by that too - is that correct: 9 years on contract???
    Can someone confirm that?

That's how I would see it, but I'm not sure we can afford to fire him being as he's locked into a 9 year contract. I've been a big Pollard supporter and still am, but that was a bad move.

If Greg can get these guys to the tournament, I'll gladly eat crow. I WANT him to do well. I'm sick to my stomach of ******* down our leg against teams from the MVC. He's shown he can recruit talented guys to ISU, now let's get some god damn wins. This was a must win for the NCAAs, IMO. These team had a gut check, and a great opportunity to show their toughness. Didn't happen.

I think there was an extension made before last season in the summer through 2015. This was done in a sneaky way and there was zero press regarding it. My guess is if there was any press at all people would have been calling for Pollard's head at the same time they were calling for McD's head.

How about if he does barely sneak into the NCAA's this year and next year is back to being a few games below 500 without Gilstrap and Brackins? Does the tournament run this year get him a few extra years?

    This.

Empty arena and lack of TV (ESPN, etc) will cost more than a buy-out.

Everyone and their brother knows that this is his year to produce, or he is on the hot seat. Maybe no fire this year, but that seat will get very hot very fast.

Probably, I am sure we will hear more of the, 'We have to look at this as McD's first year' type of excuses.

I don't disagree that this is accurate but why in the hell would Jamie do that. Certainly not based on performance.

Has to be loaded with incentives, like conference finish, NCAA to keep it going... Pollard is not foolish enough to give a 9 year deal to a guy that has never won an NCAA tournament game... at least I hope not.... even if he wins 20 this year I would not lock somebody up until he shows the ability to sustain something.

I am going off of memory, no research. I am almost positive it was in the summer though and there was zero press regarding it.

I am less worried about the money than I am the athletic department's stubbornness to let him go. Chizik got an under-the-table two year extension for crying out loud. Not exactly a results-oriented operation we have going here.
