Greg, some things you might want to...

...work on if you want to run an uptempo style. You have got to learn the basics. I'll dumb them down.

    1. GOOD defense creates offense. You can get up the floor quicker if you take possession of it inbounds, instead of catching it through the hoop and tossing it inbounds.

    2. Rebounding. This is the second thing you teach. It should never come before good defense, but should always come before #3.

    3. Good offensive Rhythm. This would include everything from good shot selection, to making layups and also getting the damn ball to Brackins. It's usually helpful to work from the inside out. This way, you get the ball to Brackins while freeing up your shooters.

Please feel free to add anything else that would help this Cyclone team improve.

    4. If two post players are scoring at will against the defense of your game plan, change the game plan!!!! It's not working!!!! Mix in a double team every now and then.
    5. If two players are not going to do anything on a final shot of the game play, just have them sit on the bench, it will open up the floor more.
    6. It is OK to run a play that has the guys away from the ball moving.

1.) It's ok to design a specific play for a guy that shoots above 50% from the 3 point line other than the last play of the game. If you need hints talk to Larry. He had 4 or 5 plays specifically designed to get Jake an open shot. We have NONE for Lucca other than just letting him hang out by the 3 point line and wait for the defender to get bored.

Now that MBB is back, do we still have to pretend that WBB matters?

Don't mean to contradict your post... I honestly do not know a lot about basketball.

UNI scored 63 points... isn't that pretty good defensively?

Not when you only score 60.

not when it is because they chose and controlled the tempo of the game.

Slowing the tempo down does not equal good defense. Once again, when things got a little tight, our coach pulled back on the reins and went back to what he was familiar with, slow down basketball. We have superior athletes at 4 of the 5 positions and didn't take advantage of it.

Find a leader on the court.
    Chew some ***.
Tell you PG there is a reason he is open.
Dictate the tempo of the game instead of always playing to what the other team wants to do.

Thats exactly the problem---McDermott can't coach tremendous athletes!!! I've posted this at least a half a dozen times but McDermott needs high IQ basketball players. Look at the guys he coached that outperformed their abilities. Jacobsen, McKowen, etc---all of those guys lacked physical ability on the court but they played the game smart. They knew their assignments, ran the offense, and were successful because they were one step ahead of the opponent.

My case and point---look at what Bryan Petersen was able to do because he played the game smarter than everyone else. Also, look at Christopherson---he is playing well this season at ISU because he plays with a high IQ. At Marquette, he never touched the floor because the style there was to run up and down the court with guys like James, McNeal, Matthews at the guard spots.

I can't think of a player in McDermott's tenure that was both athletically gifted and played the game smart....
