    Will Muschamp

What is this guy thinking. He is in line to take over at Texas so he is not even considering other jobs. The only problem is Mack Brown has 7 years on his contract and is not thinking about retiring any time soon. So Muschamp could sit there for years not taking a job because he is waiting. Not sure why he would not take a head coaching job for 4-5 years. Make them a winner and then take over for Brown when he is done.

I am with you on this one knownothing. Makes no sense to me either. Yeah, you have an elite job like Texas lined up but in the meantime, you're gaining no experience as a head coach and you really have no clue when Mack is going to call it quits.

I don't get it but hey, to each their own right?

    Re: Will Muschamp

I'd be surprised if Mack finishes out those 7 years. Just a hunch.

And if you leave UT, who says you get to come back? Stay at UT, you have everything (more or less) setup the way you want when Mack does step down. Leave, and who knows what your replacement does? At the very least, you have a voice in the program.

He's probably already making some pretty good bank as top asst, isn't he?

Nice check, gets on-the-job training, is at no real risk of being let go and is able to step into a readymade winner once Brown rides off into the sunset.

    Re: Will Muschamp

It just seams fishy to me that the guy would not want to take over his own team for a while. Trust me if he is that good of a coach he will be back at Texas when it is said and done. It would make me nervous if I was a Texas fan and we had a guy that was going to take over the had zero head coaching experience.
I would think that he would want to go prove himself as "the Man" like other coaches do. Just my take on it.

Would you gamble your winning lottery ticket on a hand of poker?

    Re: Will Muschamp

I think he should take an HC job at another school, struggle to a pathetic record for a couple seasons (say, 5-19), become firmly entrenched at that school, and then head back to Texas as soon as Mack leaves.

No but most good coaches would. That is what makes them good coaches. They are willing to take a chance.
Not to mention He told Notre Dame that he did not want to interview. Just to let everyone know right now. Notre Dam has a bigger lottery ticket than Texas for football. That is saying something.

I hear ya, but continuity/consistency are huge assets in organized athletics. Look at what the Colts did - Jim hasn't missed a beat and they're without their #1 receiver from the previous decade.

We're starting to see this trend a bit more now and I think it's really smart, if you've got an assistant in place you really believe in and has shown the qualities needed. He gets promoted, someone else is either promoted or brought in to fill his spot and nothing else changes.

They are simply eliminating variables from the equation. Just like any math equation, the more constants you have - the better.

The guy probably makes like $400k a year and he just has to sit and wait for one of the best jobs in college football to fall into his lap, he'd be crazy to leave.

Yes - but most coaches NEED to take that chance. See Chiz.

Muschamp doesn't. He's already got the HC job. Other coordinators don't. How many heir-apparents are there out there? Or in recent years? Joe-Pa's son?
