SIMS, JESSE SMITH LEAD ISU on COACHES ALL-BIG 12 TEAM

IRVING, Texas – Iowa State strong safety David Sims was named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Newcomer of the Year and Cyclone linebacker Jesse Smith earned first-team honors on the 2009 All-Big 12 Conference football team, as selected by the league’s coaches Tuesday. Five other Cyclones earned honorable mention All-Big 12 recognition.

Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads was the only coach to earn honorable mention coach-of-the-year honors. Texas head coach Mack Brown was the choice of his peers to be Big 12 coach of the year. Rhoads made the Cyclone football program bowl-eligible this season with a 6-6 record after ISU went 9-27 the previous three years. The season included a 9-7 win at Big 12 North champion Nebraska that marked Iowa State’s first victory in Lincoln in 30 years.

Re: SIMS, JESSE SMITH LEAD ISU on COACHES ALL-BIG 12 TEAM

Obviously, great awards. Smith has been an amazing story and great force in the middle of our defense.

Sims was invaluable this season and solidified a spot that has been a big weakness for us since Moser/Paris graduated. IMO, James Smith level of play (while still needing improvement) was greatly enhanced playing alongside Sims. A perfect example of the right JUCO brought in for the right position at the right time.

Look forward to watching Sims in his senior season!

I am very happy to see Sims get recognition. He is a calibur of athlete we do not often see at ISU. He had an outstanding year. Just goes to show that regardless of sport, you can come to ISU, play right away, and get due respect for achievements.

Nothing like getting things wrong in a press release.

Bill Snyder was honorable mention COY as well.

HOW was Reggie Stephens and Alexander Robinson not on the first or second team? That seems like a TOTAL miscue in my book... A-Rob was our only offense for a while even though he was HURT and was 3rd in the conference in rushing... doesn't make sense...

And David Sims is the defensive newcomer of the year, yet doesn't even make honorable mention at the position?

Re: SIMS, JESSE SMITH LEAD ISU on COACHES ALL-BIG 12 TEAM

I'm fine with the other 3 but DeMarco Murray as 2nd team RB? 678 rushing yards and 7 TDs? Did anyone notice that's about half what he put up last year or just see the OU next to his name and vote for him...

They probably just voted for Murray because he will get drafted this year.

They saw him leap into the end zone against OSU and figured that was enough.

As I mentioned in the other thread, he didn't even lead his own team in rushing.
