Eustachy rumored for New Mexico job

    This is from the gazetteonline.com.

Wouldn't this just be the sh** if Larry got the job over Alford and Alford was stuck at EIU.

    Go Larry Go!!

    -----------------------------------------

Eustachy rumored for New Mexico job

Former Iowa State Coach Larry Eustachy is rumored as a prospect for the vacant New Mexico men's basketball position, as reported by the Albuquerque Tribune.

Eustachy, who led Iowa State to two Big 12 titles and within one game of the 2000 Final Four, was mentioned among the replacements for Ritchie McKay, who was fired. Eustachy led Southern Mississippi to a 20-11 record this year, his third season with the team.

Eustachy resigned at Iowa State in 2003 following revelations that Eustachy drank alcohol and made inappropriate remarks with coeds following road games.

Speculation also swirled last week that Iowa Coach Steve Alford was interested in the New Mexico position. The Denver Post reported Sunday that Craig Neal, Iowa's associate head coach, was interested in the vacant University of Denver position. Denver fired former Iowa State assistant coach Terry Carroll, who took a lengthy leave of absence.

Another great scenario would be if Alford did take the UNM job after leading Iowa along a bit, leaving Barta unexpectedly searching for a new coach after giving Steve-O another shot.

If they can only drag along the selection process long enough that any decent coaching prospects are no longer available for Iowa............

Re: Eustachy rumored for New Mexico job

I'm not sure why New Mexico is interested in Larry. What did he do at Southern Miss? His first two years he ran a bunch of guys off and they naturally struggled in the transition period. This year he wins 20 games, but their record against division 1 competition was 16-11. Of course, when your other candidate is Steve Effin Alford, LE looks like John Wooden. I'd like to see LE stay at Southern Miss a couple more years, I think he's close to making them really solid. He's not making any money at SM though, so I'm sure New Mexico would be an upgrade in more ways than one.

It seems like I read that a Denver Nuggets assistant coach is favored for the job

Re: Eustachy rumored for New Mexico job

Why would New Mexico be interested in Eustachy??? He has won at least one conference title at every D1 school he has coached at...he has a national coach of the year under his belt...publicity for the school...and he is in the process of turning around Southern Miss as they have went from a bad, bad team his first year, to a team with it's first winning conference record in six years, with 6 of their top 7 players being freshmen and sophomores...decent resume I'd say. Whether you like the guy or not, he can definately coach.

Re: Eustachy rumored for New Mexico job

Larry is an excellent coach, and the Southern Miss job is a harder one than ISU was. At ISU, Larry was able to take the ball from Floyd and run with it. Southern Miss has been better under Larry, and I'm guessing if he stays a couple years, they will be very good. I'm not sure going from Conference USA to New Mexico is a step up.

    LE could also replace SA.

Didn't his buyout say he could never step foot in Iowa again?

I have to think Tim Floyd will be an integral part of Eustachy finding his next big job. He was definitely huge in getting LE to Iowa State and to Southern Miss.

CUSA is a sinking ship. They were a 1 bid league this year and I have to think Memphis is looking to get out. The Mountain West always seems to get 2 or 3 teams in and New Mexico will be putting a lot into getting their basketball tradition back.

LE may not have done much as far as winning the league but USM was 20-11 (9-7) and tied for 4th in the league which I think is quite a bit better than they had been. It's going to be tough for anyone to beat Memphis. They went 16-0 and won the league by 5 games.

Re: Eustachy rumored for New Mexico job

living in Albuquerque area it is obvious that U of New Mexico is ready for success again.....Dave Bliss won here(Baylor mess), Fran F got fired, and Mckay was terrible. The "PIT" seats over 18K and is in a market the size of Metro Des Moines. They have had great success here in the past, MWC is good, Money ???? LE would make more money, recuriting here would be easier than S Miss. So why not, the man can coach!

The press here has had LE front and center for over 2 weeks........his ISU problems are hashed and rehashed daily. LE has baggage and it has been everywhere.......The AD is complaining that the press is making his job diffcult, then stop telling the press you everymove and call Jamie P for advice

I read a blurb in our newspaper that he had taken an extended leave of absence. They implied that this factored into his firing, but didn't say what the leave was for.

New Mexico is a big time job in a mid major conference. The Pit, as mentioned earlier seats 18k and is extremely loud. Larry would do really well here

Re: Eustachy rumored for New Mexico job

Eustachy got 20 wins this year with maybe 1 or 2 returning players, everyone else was brand new to the program, he did an amazing recruiting job last year and got some pretty good guys there, if he can keep them, than he looks even better. He struggled at first, but he looks to have the program on track now I don't think he loses a player(Senior), maybe one but that is about it.
