where do we really stand. Talent wise.

We have seen that we have athletes that are above what we've had recently, but they still need to prove a lot. I'm really concerned about how poorly our competition is playing after we have beaten them. Did the schedule look this bad when we scheduled them?

I mean, by the eye test The skills look better "in a vacuum" but we are beating teams that look like they could go 5-22. It is one thing to have the skills to win and another to win, and we haven't had to win but 1 game. The rest were prety much given to us and the one that we had to go out and win, it was clear that we weren't put in that position much this year.

I'm really hoping that we go out and win games and not just have the skills to win, but the NU game makes me feel like charlie Brown and the proverbial football. I think it is logical to expect more from this team, but opposition tallent should not be binary, but so far we aren't making incremental steps. The oposition really seems all or nothing.

I was thiking the same thing. The only thing I can really say is we could be Iowa right now and get beat by these crappy teams. I think we will improve throughout the year. I think we have some good talent. I think we beat NU with a healthy Dendy as well.

We have middle of the pack B12 talent right now - much better than bottom 2 or 3 we've had the past few seasons.

One freakin game and threads get started like this. Simply put, we shot the ball poorly the other night against a decent team.

We are so much better than we have been the last 3 years. But, we're not a top 3 Big XII team. I think we're somewhere around 5-6. If Dendy, Gilstrap and Christopherson improve over the season, we'll be a very good team.

I think we needed the lower level of competition for these guys to get out on the floor and start creating a team. They made some great strides and I am pleased with the margin of victory in the early games. The loss to NU may have been what we needed to complete the process of becoming a true team. Time will tell, but I'm still optimistic.

Re: where do we really stand. Talent wise.

We do have talent to play with almost anyone, but what we seem to be lacking is the cohesiveness. That is somewhat to be expected since two of our top scorers are newcomers and a third newcomer is seeing allot of playing time. It doesn't help that we started with a fast schedule. After Cal I think things will slow down and I'm guessing by January we will see a much better team on the court. I still doubt we will win more than 22 games

    It's November, folks.

I also have to mention that despite all of the returnees, we are also adding in a lot of newcomers. Chrck back in January.

Take it easy Fransis, we are just talking about the schedule. You would think I just crapped in your cheerios.

I wasn't even saying that I'm upset with anything. It was a long post but what I really wanted to know about was the scheduling. Obviously we wanted some easier games, but but you build a winner by testing it. and we just haven't been tested but once. And now all of a sudden our learning curve needs to ramp up a lot. Did we know our early opponents were going to be THIS bad.

Or is this just where the chips fell, or is it just showing that we can't dictate our schedule as much as say a Duke, or Cuse team.

Sidenote in case anyone cares, NW got 15 votes in the AP poll that was just released. Also, some people must not be paying much attention because Notre Dame got 52 in that same poll.

I haven't looked much, but I don't think its all that odd. Evryone doesn't look at basing their rankings on a single game. Who would win that game away from Chicago, Who would win that game 6 times out of 10. I don't know, but I don't think its strange to feel that way base on their entire porfolio of games.

Re: where do we really stand. Talent wise.

Talent wise I think we're middle of the pack Big XII. I'm just as upset about the Northwestern loss as all of you. I am trying to remain calm for several reasons. We missed a lot of easy shots. We shot 9/15 I think it was from the FT line. We had less than a day to prepare for the "princeton offense". We also have a lot of newcomers and it's going to take some time to gel.

Having said that, don't tell me that games in November don't matter. One of the key losses that hurt us in '99-'00 was the Drake loss. We SHOULD have been a #1 seed that year. The 2 things that cost us the #1 seed were the Drake loss in November and the Big XII tournament game being played so late in the day on Sunday that seeds were decided before the game was over.

I also dislike the fact that we show very little intensity on the floor. We didn't show a sense of urgency on the floor the other night until around the 1.5 minute mark left in the 2nd half. To me, intensity levels start with the coach. In my opinion, this year is going to tell us whether or not McD belongs at ISU. Great guy! I hope he can get it done, but I'm not overly optimistic.

I think we're top 4 in talent in the Big 12, and I think that we'll be right there once all the pieces fit together (meaning top 4 in the league).

Agree. With the talent we have, we realistically can HOPE for a top 4 or 5 finish. I truly believe that.

That is why I am disappointed with the loss to NW. We should beat that team. Spin it however you want; we are better than they are. We played like absolute crap the other night and I hope the effort picks up in the coming weeks.

Of course, the curse of ISU basketball potentially lives on as we await the status of LaRon Dendy...

I disagree. I thought we played with plenty of intensity and effort. It was the execution that was lacking. Too many missed shots and poor team D. But those are things, especially the D, that you can improve on over time.
