ISU to Host NCAA Tournament First and Second Rounds

AMES, Iowa – Seventh-seeded Iowa State will play host to George Mason Friday at 7:30 p.m. CST in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Hilton Coliseum. Saint Louis and Wichita State will battle at 5 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum. The matches are part of the Omaha Regional. The winners will face each other Saturday 6:30 p.m. in Hilton.

The Cyclones (25-4) are making their fourth-straight NCAA Championship appearance. It marks the second time that Hilton Coliseum will play host to the NCAA tournament. ISU defeated Idaho in the opening round in the first round of the 1995 NCAA tournament in Ames.

“We are really excited to be hosting,” Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. “I was trying not to get my hopes up too much because you just never know, but in the back of my mind and ever since mid-season I was hoping that would happen. It is a privilege we really deserve. I feel we earned it and I am excited to see what kind of turnout we will have.”

Why would the ncaa use different rules for setting up tournaments in different sports? The men's basketball framework has been working for years and years. Why wouldn't the ncaa use those rules to set up all of the tournaments.

Because the NCAA is a corrupt, absentminded bunch of ****ing morons. That's why.

    True and Valiant

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

The MBB setup requires a lot of travel. The MBB tournament brings in a lot of TV money to pay for that travel. Other sports usually use a true regional setup to reduce travel costs -- I think WBB used to to it that way as well.

No, the top 16 women's volleyball teams are to be spread throughout the brackets, across the country - to balance competition. And for the most part, they are, like #2 Illinois to the Stanford regional, #2 UCLA to Gainesville, #1 Florida State and #2 Washington to Minn., etc.
    Then there's the Omaha regional...

Top 16 yes, but not the remaining 48. It's my understanding (and you can correct me if I'm wrong) that the remaining 48 schools are placed largely based on geographic location, not ranking.

So that might explain TAMU (though you could easily ship them off to florida) but not ISU\Texas\Nebraska in the same regional.

As far as that goes, it just seems like the selection committee screwed up big time.

Yes, that's correct. I was just referring to the Omaha issue.
But yes, ISU knew that if they were hosting first and second rounds, it would be made up of area teams. George Mason came in to fill the bracket.

Re: ISU to Host NCAA Tournament First and Second Rounds

Our conference officials need to jump all over this. Three teams that have a shot a the final four get shoved into one bracket and all the other conferences are treated fairly. They need to make sure this never happens again. We are undeniably rising to become a national power in volleyball. Texas, and of course, Nebraska don't seem to be sliding down any. We don't want to this to become an annual problem.
