What is wrong with our defense?

I know GMac is stressing defense all the time. But still, what was wrong over the weekends? We allow SLU shot about 65% 2 pointers in the first half, and 50% in the second half (2 pointers). And against NW, we allowed them 49% field goal through out the game.

I know we did much better against weaker opponents, but to me this past weekend was the first real test for the team as they finally started to play against some average competition.

I am bothered by these numbers. We are not going to win many Big 12 games if our components consistantly shoot around 50%.

I'm more worried about how we shoot free throws than our defense.

Wayne gave Gmac a deal on a tv set and now gets to call our D sets for the next few weeks.

Rebounding is more of a problem than our defense. You can't allow other teams to get offensive rebounds like we have been doing.

    So which one is it?

Rebounding, free throws, or defense? You guys need to make up your mind.

Well giving up 67 points is not terrible? They had several open shots but the offense they run is tough to defend. My issue was where is the offense? We took ill advised shots, missing point blank and rushing everything. I think when we took a double digit lead we let off and they fought hard and was rewarded with the win. Gilstrap and Steiger were absent in the second half. Many of Brakins shots were tough high degree of difficulty shots when all we needed was good shots?

We just don't want to do the dirty work. We never have in Gmac's time here. A finesse, jump-shooting team, that gets pushed around, is what we are. When the outside shots fall, we look pretty, and hopes rise again.

All three can... no NEED to be improved.

Although Nothwestern runs those back door cuts against every team so that wasn't really bad defense but good offense.

Yes. We didn't guard the back cut very well. Our defense will be fine. It is the least of my worries with this team

Free Throw shooting worries me. We would of won that game if we made our FTs

Re: What is wrong with our defense?

Our defense is not our leading worry. Free throw shooting is.

Northwestern's offense made us look bad at times on defense, but they make everyone look bad at times on defense. That's just how that offense is designed. I thought we did a fine job for most of the game defending against them. Sure, Shurna had another great game, but it wasn't enough to kill us (we were in it at the end).

The problem last night was free throw shooting and a terrible 2nd half offensively. We scored 26 points in the 2nd half. Not good. Actually, our defense is what kept us IN the game last night when we couldn't buy a bucket. You can't stop a team from scoring for a whole game. You will give up a reasonable amount of points, but you need to be able to score, and we just couldn't do that late in the 2nd half.

All we had to do was hit free throws and we likely win the game...
