    MWC/WAC bcs bowls

I've been thinking about this for a week. What if the MWC, the WAC, and the new BCS "president", got together and ironed out a plan to have these conferences represented in the BCS. The 2 conferences would play there regular schedules and the champions would play for a birth in the BCS. If the losing team is still ranked high enough they could still be selected. The winning team gets a strong win on their resume and may get a chance in the title game. And the conferences get a chance to showcase their brand to the nation.

Let me know what u guys think.

Instead of conference championship games, they would have an inter-conference championship, play-in sort of thing?

    Interesting.

I kind of like the idea, but don't think it would happen. If they would do this, they could do it will a lot of the conference champions and call it anything but a playoff.

I think it's an intriguing idea, and worth some thought. Other than the old bowl system, anything is better than what we have now IMO.

Then we can have a Big 10 vs Pac 10 and a Big 12 vs SEC plus 2 more at large bids and walla we got an 8 team playoff.

It is funny that if they actually could get that passed, it would easily open the door to a playoff. Probably why I think they wouldn't do it.

    Re: MWC/WAC bcs bowls

What do you do about CUSA and the MAC and the Sun Belt conference etc?

The biggest reason that the mid majors aren't in the BCS is that they don't have the revenue base (i.e. fanbase) to support those bowl games financially. By giving them access, you're basically establishing a meritocracy based on performance and not on revenue, which is the way it has always been, and that's what keeps the system working.

You're not giving the rest of the teams in D1 that equal access based on performance, though.

And what happens when you don't have good teams in those conferences? You could very easily have a 2 or 3 loss MWC or WAC team in the BCS. A few good years by a couple of powerhouse teams in a weakish conference does not a major conference make.

Just combine the best teams from the two conferences to create a 7th BCS league, The Big West Conference. The left-overs can become the MAC of the west. It should have been done 5 years ago.

I think the Mtn West should just snake Boise State and Fresno State and they can have their own BCS Bid... If they wanted to get wild and crazy with 12 teams about about taking Houston and Tulsa...

IMO, the best way to fix it is to have a "BCS Relegation" system, where teams could play into a modified BCS system regardless of what conference they play in. Take the top x teams at the end of the year (using the BCS formula) and make them the BCS field for the next year.

The obvious problem is that there is a lot of turnover in college football teams, but I think that if you set "x" appropriately, you're going to have the bulk of the good teams in there year-in, and year-out, while still giving teams that are on the outside looking in a legit chance.

The other big problem is how do you make the schedules equitable, and that's perhaps something you could do by forcing participating teams to have reasonable schedules i.e. must play a minimum of x BCS field teams each year in order to be eligible for the field. This would require some more scheduling flexibility than we currently have, but it doesn't mean that Utah is going to have to go begging every year, it just means that they might need to find other teams in the same plight before the season starts if there aren't enough BCS eligible teams in their conference.

I think the biggest benefit of all of this is that you could really make D1 football across the board instead of having just 1A and 1AA. What that would do to conferences, I have no idea, but it's really the only fair way that I can think of to decide something so complicated with so few games and so many teams.
