    GameDay: Herbstreit on Notre Dame

    College GameDay - ESPN

If the link doesn't take you directly to it, click the video link that says "GameDay: What Went Wrong for Weis".

Herbstreit becomes the first national "talking head" to tell it like it is about Notre Dame on a national telecast.

"Notre Dame hasn't been relevant since 1993..."

I couldn't get it, either. What did he say?

I don't get why some people say ND is not relevant and hasn't been since '94. You can get on any board for any school across the country and fans discuss Weis, the next coach, etc. Every idiot talking head has a story of rehashed rumor to spew on TV. Why are people talking about them if they're not relevant?

I'm not gonna discuss the team and performance on the field because I'm as disgusted as any ND fan, but you can't say ND is not relevant.

Remind me what of relevance ND has done over the last 20 years?

Just because youre talked about on TV, does not mean you have relevance. See: some of the characters that get talked about 24\7 on cable news or entertainment news. Theyre the football equivalent of Paris Hilton. Once upon a time, someone in that family did something worthwhile, but now, Paris is famous for being famous, and Notre Dame is talked about just because they are Notre Dame, not because they actually do anything worthwhile on the football field.

Right. I don't think he was talking about relevancy to the college football world as much as he was relevancy to a national Championship or close to a National Championship.

    Lessee-Last 20 years...
Overall 167-87, 30 players on current NFL rosters, 2 for 2 in #1 vs #2 matchups, top 20 12 times, top 10 5 times (at end of season), top graduation rate in Div. 1 football, Wins in the Fiesta, Cotton (2), Hawaii, Orange and Sugar bowls.

Granted, not top echelon or elite today, but certainly "relevant".

The assertion made was "since 1993". From 1994-present they are 114-78. The 1vs2 matchups? Prior. Top 20 and top 5? They are consistently overranked. Graduation rate? Who cares? And almost all those bowls listed? Prior.

Last big win? Last big bowl win? How many championships?

My point is they beat up on pretty soft schedules when they have good records. Lately when they get to big games they get beat. They haven't been anyone of note in I don't know how long. If you consider the Cotton bowl big they have won 5 "big" bowls and according to the quoted, they have won 6 bowls in the last 20 years. Not too many of those came from the last 10. I know ND is relevant as far as coverage, but they don't scare anyone they play. They aren't very competitive with USC, the one big chance they have every year to prove something. Michigan has owned them as of late in a not so good era of football there.

Graduation rate matters, but it will always be higher their because the kids they are getting are academically superior to most places.

I think you're missing the bigger picture... Herbstreit is calling the ND @ Stanford game tonight on ABC/ESPN2. To say this, on the network that writes his checks, on the day that he will be broadcasting a Notre Dame game on that network, is ballsy and refreshing.

    Bravo, Kirk.
