Brian Kelly says Notre Dame job will be decided in next 7 to 10 days

At the top of the Illinois-Cincinnati broadcast on ABC, Bob Griese offered up a nugget nearly as eyebrow-raising as Griese's recent commentary regarding Colombian cuisine.

Teed up by our buddy Chris Spielman, who looks to be doing very well after enduring what surely has been the most difficult week of his life, Griese nonchalantly dropped a bombshell.

"I talked to Brian Kelly on the field just before the ball game, and he said something will be decided in the next seven to 10 days," Griese said.

    Wow.

Here's what this implies, in our view.

First, Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis is out.

Second, Kelly already has been contacted by Notre Dame.

Interesting if true. Would this mean that if Kelly were to accept the job that he would not be able to coach against Pitt and Cincy's potential BCS game?

I'm REALLY surprised that he's the first guy ND calls. He's a good coach, hell maybe a great coach, but he's gotta have some skeletons in that closet. I still expect a full pass at Urban Meyer.

    Urban Meyer 3/2
    Brian Kelly 3/2

    Jim Harbaugh 3/1
    Chip Kelly 5/1
    Kirk Ferentz 10/1
    Bob Stoops 20/1
    Jon Gruden 30/1

Would Tubberville or Fullmer be interested?

Not if it's decided in the next 7-10 days. In that case, either he goes to ND or he wins his 3rd national title at Florida. Under this scenario he can't do both.

I'm sure Tubberville and Fullmer are interested... But I can also guarantee you that ND has no interest in them at all.

Re: Brian Kelly says Notre Dame job will be decided in next 7 to 10 days

I don't think that Urban will go to Notre Dame. He has way too good of a thing going on in Florida. He does have to realize that if he does not take the job, IF being offered, then he will never get another . Right now life is going great for him but Florida much like ND expects nothing but the best. Can Urban continue to produce NC teams every year? Zook and Spurrier can both tell him he better if he wants to stay. With FSU, Miami and now USF in the mix for getting top tier talent in florida IMHO I dont see that being very possible.

why would he not ever get another offer? Michigan is going to come groveling back to les miles at some point. Notre Dame could come back to meyer too.

Re: Brian Kelly says Notre Dame job will be decided in next 7 to 10 days

I really think this was taken way out of context. Bob Griese is kind of an attention whore IMO and wanted to say something to stir something up. I would guess Brian Kelly was talking more about the job opening up than him considering taking it. I don't think he was at all saying that HE would decide in that time frame.

I still think Urban is gonna end up at ND if they wait until January.

I don't know. RR has at least another year. I think he does enough next year to go to a fourth and really I think he is there for awhile. Remember, Michigan typically is pretty patient. They gave Amaker 6 ridiculously painful years. They gave Lloyd as long as he wanted. Moeller even got a long time. Now, if he is gone after next year, here is the problem with Les Miles. He hasn't made a ton of progress. Yes, LSU competes year in and year out, but they have failed to win big games since their NC and other coaches are rising. Harbaugh, Kelly, Chris Peterson, Turner Gill. Honestly I don't think LSU fans would be all that disappointed to see him leave. For now, RR isn't going anywhere. If he does, my guess is that they go back to Ron English if he doesn't get a big job by then. We will just have to wait and see.

I'm really surprised the way he's kind of fallen off the radar. It seems like three years ago all you heard about was his defense at Michigan (the "English Majors"). Seems like he was fast tracking, and then last year he's Kragthorpe's d-coordinator on a sinking Louisville ship, and now he's at Eastern Michigan. Figured he'd be somewhere a little more high profile at this point in time.
