    Car Question

So I changed my front brake pads on monday and put the wheels back on like usual, torqued the lugnuts down and thought everything had gone fine. On my way to the dentist tuesday morning, I decided to take 380 through downtown cedar rapids to save a few minutes over taking first ave. As I got near the 1st ave exit, my car started making a jackhammer sound.

Because of the traffic, I decided to try to make the exit rather than pulling over on the spot. About 20 ft later however, my front drivers side wheel flew off, leaving me with only three wheels at the beginning of the s-curve, which I can attest, is not a fun experience.

I took it to the shop and I'm getting it back later today, with new rotors, control arms and a new wheel. Because I wanted to head back to ames today (I've got a couple of papers to write that I need books from sweeney to work on) all they were able to get as far as a wheel was a plain black steel one.

It turns out that what happened was just a metal failure issue both on the part of the bolts the wheel goes on and the holes in the wheel that the bolts go into, nothing wrong with the way I put the wheel back on, the holes were just slightly oversized due to the failure, causing the lugnuts to work their way off, causing me to have to replace about $1200 dollars worth of parts on my $5000 car.

Since I've been able to get everything else back to normal with the car, do you guys know of any good places either in the ames/DSM area, or online, where I could go to get a matching set of wheels? I'm not looking for anything fancy, just 4 decent wheels that match.

I'd try tirerack.com. You can find wheel/tire combos for ~$600.

    Re: Car Question

Area salvage yards are probably your best bet. Or you could post a "wanting to buy" ad on Craigslist with a picture of the wheel you are looking for...that might work.

Sam's Riverside had a pretty good selection of salvaged wheels when I needed one a few years back.

    Re: Car Question

You have one of the most common cars in America, go to a junkyard.

Or sell the 3 old rims and rock a complete set of steelies

    Re: Car Question

Spraypaint...Eastside of Des Moines method, or pay someone from the eastside to grab the wheels from the westside. Buy 4 Doughnuts and have a lowrider.

In all seriousness.....all you can do is shop around....if you want ubcaps on there...go to a junk yard and get three other wheels. If yo want rims and be dubbed....you can get some decent ones for about 50 a piece...but what you stated is a little vague on what you really wanted. Do you want hubcaps or rims? What size rims?
