Chris Petersen may leave Boise after this year?

Daily Progress - Boise State coach Chris Petersen is the leading candidate to become Virginia’s next head football coach.

Petersen, 45, is considered one of the top young coaches in the country, having led Boise State to a 46-4 record in four seasons. His current Broncos’ team is 11-0 and hoping to earn a BCS bid at the end of the season.

While some college football observers commented earlier this year that Petersen was “ungettable,” things have obviously changed.

The Boise State coach has reportedly been frustrated the past couple of years with the salaries of his assistant coaches and has unsuccessfully campaigned his athletic director and the Western Athletic Conference office to improve those wages.

“If Chris Petersen were to leave Boise State, that would be one of, if not the major reason for his exit,” said one source in Boise on Wednesday.

I wonder if any Big 12 schools or Notre Dame will give him a call

It worked so well for Dan Hawkins... I say go for it!

Now that MBB is back, do we still have to pretend that WBB matters?

And the BCS committee quietly hopes for a flop as his replacement.

As long as he stays away from the Big XII, I'm happy.

The college football landscape is a little harder outside of the WAC.

    Ask Dan Hawkins.

Re: Chris Petersen may leave Boise after this year?

I love the way people rip on Boise State. The school has found ways to be a power program over the past decade, won just about every game they've played, won in a BCS game against OU and are once again undefeated. It isn't easy to recruit to Idaho or the WAC and yet they still look great in the Top 10 year after year.

Personally, I think the job they've done at BSU should be a model for a lot of other schools. They play late weeknight games to get on national tv more, schedule a PAC10 team early in the year to help SOS, score a lot of points to help with offensive recruiting, have the blue turf to make it memorable and because of all that they have one of the best records of any program over the past 5-6 years.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

They have done an amazing job there. Boise State has done everything you could possibly expect them to do, IMO. They even created their own bowl game. They are a picture of what you have to do at a mid major (hell, even at a BCS conference program) to elevate your program.

The reality is, though, that they are in a second tier conference, and they will never be able to shake that in the current system. Just like ISU will always be at a disadvantage in terms of revenue in the college football landscape, Boise State will have that to fight against, as well as the reality that they are in a conference that simply isn't as tough as the rest of the major conferences. I mean, their "clash of the titans" this week is Nevada, which may be one of the toughest tests of the year for them. That's a tuneup game for serious contenders.

They tend to play their BCS opponents early in the season, where upsets are more likely to happen, especially for young teams, and depth is much less of an issue.

Their win against Oklahoma, while an absolutely tremendous game, required two trick plays in a row against an Oklahoma team that really wasn't all that great, and had pretty much quit going into the game (not to mention Choklahoma hasn't fared too well in the BCS even when they are good).

I have no problem giving them their due, but there is no way that, say, Iowa or a dozen other teams in the nation wouldn't have gone through that schedule undefeated. Hell, I'd even argue that ISU would have a legit shot at that acing that schedule this year. Given, they have a lot of advantages that Boise doesn't, but the reality is that Boise has a huge advantage that everyone else in the BCS doesn't - a relatively cake schedule.

The question will always be, where does the best of the mid majors stack up against the best of the best?

I hope that Boise ends up going to the Pac 10 or the MWC in a couple of years when the conferences are out of the freeze the NCAA put them in
