I like it because I can watch all these games to fill the day, however I am not thrilled about CBS losing the NCAA tournament...we dont get ESPN at work ...but seriously

I definitely agree with Mr. Frederick. I used to live ESPN in like 1993..1996..etc but now they're just annoying.

A lot of people don't like it but I would MUCH rather watch basketball on CBS than ESPN. I think they usually do a much better job of it and the quality of announcers on average is better.

Don't worry, in a few years ESPN will eliminate CBS basketball coverage and be able to hire those announcers for themselves.

    Re: Regarding ESPN/TV Coverage...great article

The good news is that our tournament for next year, the Diamond Head Classic, is owned by ESPN. So this time next year, we'll be excited about all the Cyclone games on ESPN.

The big issue is competition for ESPN. Without a change in the pricing models for cable, no competition will happen. The tiered model of cable and satellite: basic, standard, HDTV, sports package has given ESPN the monopoly. Any new sports station has to fight to get on the Standard package, like ESPN is currently. No cable provider wants that, because they lose money by having to pay for the extra station but not get any extra back. Kinda like the Big 10 fight the last couple of years.

So the new station has to go on the sports+ package, at an extra 6 to 10 dollars a month. Since not everyone gets that package, they're at a competitive disadvantage to ESPN in advertising dollars (since less people watch).

The only solution I see to breaking ESPN's monopoly hold on sports is to go to a "pay-per-station" model, where a subscriber can choose ala carte the stations they want. Not surprisingly, everyone who is benefiting from the current situation (cable companies, satellite, ESPN) are opposed to ala carte. THey're essentially gumming up the regulatory process with lobbyists and regulatory challenges.

If ESPN gets march madness and Dick Vitale ends up doing those games, I'm gonna kill several small animals. I cannot stand to watch any game Vitale is announcing. He's one of the reasons I like march madness so much, because he isn't doing it.

ESPN has a monopoly no doubt, but they also took the chance 30 years ago of starting a network devoted to sports that no one thought would work. They are still reaping the benefits of innovation.

It is too bad Fox Sports cannot get their **** together to give ESPN a run for their money. Everything else they have done has turned to gold yet they have a mess of a sports networks. Just think if they could put up a national station on every cable network.

With networks like the BTN and others why cannot they get contracts to televise these tournys?

It would be so sweet if Fox and the B12 teamed up together. Fox has the BCS games for football, but doesn't do a single other college football game. Why not? Put on 2 B12 games on national TV each week and then let Versus and FSN pick up the rest.

Like Fox is going to tell MLB to take a hike in favor of Big 12 football?

That would be cool too. But I was talking about an ESPN like channel on cable. They have 20 regional networks but they all kind of do their own thing. THey could put up a game or 4 a day on the main channel and/or look in at the regional games.

They could have a 11:00 FB game then have baseball and/or do night FB games.

I still think that our best bet would be to have NBC pick up the Big12 in 2015 when ND's contract ends. They have enough channels at their disposal that we wouldn't need a Big12 network.

This is the last year for the BCS on FOX.

It's better than to TV at all isn't it? I was thinking more of dropping the Saturday marathons on USA network and putting games on there along with Versus and Comcast Sportsnet. They also would have the experience and the cable network to start up the Big12 network if it came to that.
