    Shrinking the rotation

They talked about this a little during the game broadcast last night, but with better competition now showing up in the near future the rotation is probably going to start getting a little tighter. Who do you see being the odd guys out for minutes? I think Boozer and Colvin will see big reductions.

    It's an excellent point.

I think the starting lineup stays the same, but Ham loses some minutes (he's only averaging 14 right now).

I'd say that Brackins, Gilstrap, Lucca, DG, Scotty and Dendy will get the majority of the minutes.

Ham, JVB, Colvin and Buckley will see some time, but less than 12-15 minutes a game.

That's still a lot of players seeing time, though, and it doesn't include Boozer.

    Re: Shrinking the rotation

I think Ham's time will depend on the opponent. He will not play much against SLU but will play more against ND. The biggest change will be CB and MG going up to 32-35 minutes and the others will suffer accordingly. They will keep giivng Colvin minutes because with experience he will become that good and they appear to need to keep him happy. I think Scotty will take minutes from Lucca as the season goes on and Dendy will play a lot more than Ham as we get close to the big 12 season.

They are fun to watch this year...

Dendy is the big factor. He should be back shortly. I see L.A. Pomlee getting about 40 minutes a game soon. You just can't keep that guy on the bench.

    Re: Shrinking the rotation

I don't think he will shrink the rotation. I think he will plan to play 10 guys each night. I loved that Lucca and CB were hot for the Drake game and they played 30+ minutes. If someone is playing well on a particular night, I think Mac will keep him in there. If not, someone else will see the time.

I agree with JRE that CB and MG will see increased minutes in the meaningful games...that will trim about 10 minutes from others.

I prefer the Tom Davis strategy of take them out while their hot and let them set and think about it.

    Re: Shrinking the rotation

I don't think that Boozer will lose too many minutes...he can defend and is starting to play within the system. His stat line might not look amazing, but I don't think that you can cut him down too much.

If I were to guess, I think that you will see diante playing a lot more minutes. I think that greg has been playing Chris and Buck more to try to get them assimilated into the game.

That was also a speciality of George Raveling. He delivered at least 2 games to us by taking out his hot hands at the most inopportune times.

I remember watching film of Iowa in High School to learn their secondary break (this is in FL) and our coach would always comment about Dr. Tom taking guys out when they were hot...

    Re: Shrinking the rotation

According to Mac after the game, he anticipates the rotation continuing to be around 9, and then 10 when Dendy is back. I think he's got a lot of good guys to switch in for match-ups. Christopherson and Colvin seem to be better defenders than Lucca and Garrett, so depending on the match-up, I could see them getting minutes. Also, I believe that Boozer is a more than adequate guy to give Gilstrap some breathers. He can defend pretty well, and is an energy guy on both sides of the court.

I think the only one whose minutes will really increase will be Craig. But, it's still nice having the ability to give him a breather, and bring in a Dendy who won't make you lose too much of a step. And Ham will be out there when we need a little more of a defensive presence, and JVB will help to stretch out the offense.

I hate to say it, but I think Buckley is the odd man out of the rotation. I like the way he plays, as he's always talking on defense, has a nice jumper, and pretty good court vision. But, it seems apparent that Colvin has jumped him on the "depth chart". It will be nice to have his experience in there late in games though, if the situation calls for it. I like our depth this year...

Looking at his UNI days, coach loves to rotate people in and out.

u have the starting 5 then u will have scott, dendy, colvin, JVB,and if we need more D in a game we will go 10deep and Booz will get in. Buck is on the outside looking in with playing time i think.

    Re: Shrinking the rotation

Wow! I can hardly believe it. We are legitimately 11 players deep. Antwon Oliver and Bubu Palo are redshirting. L.A. Pomlee and Alex Dorr through my observations are the only other two guys that are not Big XII ready at this point. I feel totally comfortable with whoever else we run out there. Reducing the rotation to 9 may be beneficial in the long-run; however, I don't think there is a need to do that right away. Keep guys competing in practice for minutes. I love this team! Let's enjoy it!
