Coach Rutter: "Wouldn't you like to drive a fast car?"

Chris asked Coach Rutter this morning (paraphrasing)...

"What's it like to coach this team, is it as fun as it looks?"

    Rutter responded with...

"Wouldn't you like to drive a fast car?"

LOVED that quote and it's a great analogy. So accurate.

Later in the interview, he noted GMac has really adapted his style and it's now more about "rebound and run, rebound and run".

the thing about GMAC adapting his style is something I have been wondering about, and it is nice to hear that he is not too stuck in his ways to change. The team certainly plays differently this year

We have the athletes to do that this year and I don't think that was the case in the past. I think with our offense weapons we will be able to keep up with anyone. Not completely sold on our defense yet but there has been obvious improvement.

I agree. I don't believe previous seasons slow down game were a result of GMAC being stubborn and sticking to "his" system. He didn't have the horses to play an up and down game like we are now. Can you imagine AT, SH, and BP on a fast break. We would have gotten detroyed and the higher scoring game wouldn't given us a chance to close the gap. GMAC did what he had to do with his previous teams.

Yep sickens me how much some of us had to defend this the last couple of years. Some just cant see the forest through the trees.

On a similar note, when we had mostly second teamers in late in the game last night, you could hear McD screaming "Go, Go, Go!" as soon as Buckley got a Defensive Rebound. He WANTS them to push it.

Rutter said just that, after his rebound and run comment, he said Greg has been telling Diante to get the ball and push it up the court.

Just as much as having the personel to push the ball, the depth of this team is a huge factor as well. Players can push the ball and run because they know there is a good option to come in for them when they are gassed.

Re: Coach Rutter: "Wouldn't you like to drive a fast car?"

It started with Coach Mac understanding the type of player that needed to be recruited to compete in the big 12. This change of recruiting philososophy has allowed us to play this style and hopefully see success.

Would I have to break out into this song if I do?

Oh come on, he always understood that. Its not like Thompson, Haluska and Petersen were top options.

We've got the horses now, so we can run.

Gmac in the past had to play with the cards he was delt and the first 3 year player rotations were not good.

Right. I don't think it was so much a change in strategy as it was a change in recruiting success, and most importantly, getting a full roster with no major (unexpected) turnover from year to year.

He's not an idiot. He's always known the type of player he needed for success in the B12. With all the turmoil, it's just taken a few years to get it all together.
