    Alford's Season

I'm not a big fan of Alford at all but did anyone really expect this Iowa team to do well this year? They finished above where I thought they would in the Big X, however I figured they'd get into the NIT too. Their team was basically a one-man show so should their fans really be that upset? I guess I can see their anger if they focused it more on his recruiting leaving the cupboard bare for next year...

    Re: Alford's Season

Why would they get rid of him?
They will never, ever, be able to find anyone better.
    He's such a nice guy.

    Re: Alford's Season

I think Hawk fans are looking over to Ames and seeing a brand new coach with a completely rebuilt team come close to match Alford's season. Given the talent lost, and the talent coming back, I thought they did well to finish as they did. That being said, you would hope after that many years that the cupboard would be less bare.

Maybe if he just had better assistant coaches he would do better because he is a terrific coach. It can't be him after 8 (12) years, it just has to be the assistants.

    Re: Alford's Season

Steve has taken his teams to post-season play 6 of 8 years, and is 4-4 against Iowa State.
He is the best man for the job.
Yes, maybe he needs to clean house with his staff and bring in new assistants.

You defended McCarney for the same thing. It was the assistant coaches.

    Re: Alford's Season

He just fired two assistants last year and brought in two new ones this year.

    Re: Alford's Season

OK in all seriousness, I thought that Alford's team got better as the season went on. I don't know if it was due to improvement, or how bad the Big 10 really was. But all in all, I would say that he did do one of his better coaching jobs. Now, if it would have been a regular year in the conference, I don't know if they would have won 9 conference games. But they still took advantage of what was presented to them.

OK, I got to admit I'm not always the sharpest tack in the box, but I have read this post 5 times and can't find one jab at McCarney. It's got to be in there, I just know it has to.

That is a poor comparison in my opinion. In order to justify the comparison, you would have to say that the Iowa basketball program was in similar shape when Alford took over, as when McCarney took over Iowa State football. I don't believe that is the case.

Iowa athletic director Gary Barta said Monday that another rebuilding year under coach Steve Alford will not be acceptable.
After reading this why is Barta even letting Alford come back? Losing Haluska and Henderson I can't imagine they'll do any better next season.

Stevearino is the bomb. He has great hair and primps nice on the sidelines. Great coach besides. Best Iowa can do. Didn't he invent the one man zone defense?

    Re: Alford's Season

Gotta love Steve. He does everything he can to make it difficult to fire him. Now it's "he's headed in the right direction" or "he's upgraded his staff" or "look at our 2008 recruits". Some fans can explain away anything. Please Barta, extend his contract another year!
