    This would suck

Mom: Son in coma heard everything for 23 years - More health news- msnbc.com

" A man who emerged from what doctors thought was a vegetative state says he was fully conscious for 23 years but could not respond because he was paralyzed, his mother said Monday."

Talk about a living hell. Reminds me of Johnny Got His Gun, in a way.

Have you seen the movie, "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly"? It's about a guy that is fully mentally intact, but can't move/speak at all. He dictated his story to a nurse via blinking.

No, I haven't heard of it. I read Johnny Got His Gun as a teenager, and that was a fictional story about a soldier who lost sight, hearing and almost everything else, and eventually communicated through Morse code by tapping his head on the pillow.

What a horrible thing to happen to someone. I hate sitting in one place for more than 5 minutes. I cant imagine the horror of not being able to do or say anything at all.

Diagnosed as comatose, man was actually conscious for 23 years.

I can't even begin to wrap my head around what this would be like.

Trapped in his own body for 23 years - the coma victim who screamed unheard | World news | guardian.co.uk

For 23 years Rom Houben was imprisoned in his own body. He saw his doctors and nurses as they visited him during their daily rounds; he listened to the conversations of his carers; he heard his mother deliver the news to him that his father had died. But he could do nothing. He was unable to communicate with his doctors or family. He could not move his head or weep, he could only listen.

Doctors presumed he was in a vegetative state following a near-fatal car crash in 1983. They believed he could feel nothing and hear nothing. For 23 years.

    ..........
    .........

The moment it was discovered he was not in a vegetative state, said Houben, was like being born again. "I'll never forget the day that they discovered me," he said. "It was my second birth".

Reminds me of the movie "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly". I highly recommend anyone who is fascinated by this story to check the movie out.

Aka: Le scaphandre et le papillon

Really good movie. First thing I thought of when I read the title of the thread.

Should warn those who have not seen it...it is subtitled.
