    The Drake Effect

Yes, we seemed happy when Drake won State Champs, but it was costly.

Drake essentially went nowhere in their conference after they beat UNI, ISU and Iowa.

Iowa did not make the NIT perhaps because of the Drake loss in Iowa City.

ISU finished 15-16 due to the Drake loss. They had small NIT hopes until they lost to TT. Those may have been bigger if they had beaten Drake.

UNI failed to make NIT due to Drake losses - their conference record was not good enough.

Not sure we can afford another Drake as State Chanps, Tom Dacis.

All the Drake victoires were bad losses for the other three schools.

You are probably right that the Drake loss hurt everyone, but Iowa lost to them in Des Moines...

    Re: The Drake Effect

Sorry about that guffaw. I thought EIU was located in Des Moines according to the rag.

It is also amazing only six NCAA at large bids went to mid majors. The Big Ten and Big 12 were down, Big East did not receive their 9 bids, so who gobbled up the spots? Looks like NFL parity has arrived in recruiting. We have 40-60 teams who can beat each other. We have some No. 1 seeds who are beatable. The days of total dominance by UCLA or another school are long gone. Parity is the new prime mover.

We woulda been a good NIT team if we had finished off Drake, KU, and Tech

    we would have been 18-13

Next year we need more of a game finisher mentality. The loss to Bradley was ridiculous also.

That comment reminded me of something I heard on TV that I thought was pretty interesting.

The West bracket has a total of 30 national championships between the teams.
    UCLA 11
    Kentucky 7
    Indiana 5
    Duke 3
    Kansas 2
    Villanova 1
    Holy Cross 1

That's four of the top five all-time plus KU tied for 6th.

Unfortuntately, not all of those 40-60 teams made it into the NCAA tourney.
I have no doubt that Kansas State is better than many of the "low-major" teams that made it in by virtue by getting their automatic conference bid, and that KSU would have had a much better chance of knocking off a higher seeded team. The NCAA tourney simply does not seed the best 64 teams in the country.

Now that the NCAA owns the NIT, I'd use the early rounds of the NIT to finalize the field for the NCAA. Start the field with 112 teams. The bottom 64 teams participate in a two-round play-in tourney on Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday, which will leave 16 teams. These 16 teams join the top 48 teams to make the traditional 64-team tourney that starts on Thursday/Friday.

To finish the NIT, pick the highest 16 seeds from the 48 that were eliminated from the Th/Fr/Sa/Su first/second round games, and let them play for the "NIT championship". Or alternately, take the 16 teams that lost in the second round and let them play for the NIT championship, so that teams who pulled off a first round upset get rewarded.

Being someone who doesn't subscribe to the Rag and looks at it VERY sporatically online, I just don't get wtf is up with the DM Rag and the city of DM. I am guessing from everyones sounds that its all hawkeyes that work at the Rag...I have family in DM and get there every once in awhile, but for the most part don't see too much of the capital city. DM has a 1/4 million people and ISU fans online make it sound like 200,000 of them are hawk fans...I just don't know how a city 25 minutes from Ames and 2 hours from IC (the FORMER capital I might add, and trust me, one can tell it is the FORMER capital) can be so biased towards the team 2 hours away rather than the Cyclones who are basically in there backyard. I honestly think the Cyclones should dominate Des Moines and especially recruits coming from there. If I were Gene Chizik (I know this is in a basketball post, but I guess you can include McD, Fennelly, Sanderson, etc. into this), but I would hit up the DM coaches and recruits BIG TIME...hopefully soon we can get our programs up to the point where kids will barely consider going east to e.i.c.c. instead of to ISU. ISU should own DM. I just feel the best way to fight our rivals who are in iowa's former capital, is to have the biggest following in the current capital. My two cents.

    Re: The Drake Effect

I don't understand the Rag's deal either. Like in Phoeinx for example, the "Arizona Republic" is far more of an Arizona State paper than U of A. That's the way it should be considering the location of the schools campuses. ASU has Phoeinx, U of A has Tucson. Here it should be ISU has Des Moines, and Iowa has Cedar Rapids. Instead, the Hawks dominate both markets from a pub standpoint. I'm sure that's partially because of our athletic programs not being traditional powers several years ago, but they need to get with the times as Iowa State and the Big 12 are a big deal in \ athletics.

The Rag's "deal" is to make money. Apparently, they've decided that they can make the most money by doing what they are doing now.

    Re: The Drake Effect

Just curious...how is it that Iowa finishes 3rd or 4th in the Big 10 and doesn't make the NIT, but teams tied or below them actually make the NCAA Tournament? I don't mean to stick up for Iowa here, I'm saying they didn't deserve six teams in the Big Dance.

    Re: The Drake Effect

I can give a little insight into to of the above posts. First, the selection committee treats the NCAA field as 325? independents. According to the chairman, they do not look at conferences, but at the overall records. Therefore, if Mich. State and Purdue finished lower than Iowa but played a better overall schedule or won more road games they could be selected ahead of Iowa. The problem I have with this logic is: back in Oct. some "experts" say the Big 10 is the 3-4? strongest conference, then all the conference wins are given more credence, even when the Big 10 goes 4-7 in the ACC challenge? As far as recruiting more Des Moines athletes, IF there were more good athletes coming out of Des Moines schools, they would be recruited. The truth is, for 1/4 M people, Des Moines just does not produce many Div. 1 athletes.

Looks like the days of scheduling 10-2 cupcakes early in the season just to pad your record for an NCAA run are over. I'm glad to see the selection folks punish some teams for this practice (Sorry Huggie and K-State).

    Re: The Drake Effect

I hate the Drake! Maybe the whole thing was a scam. Anybody can just get engaged and get presents and just keep them all. Maybe they're on their way to Chicago tomorrow and do the whole thing all over again.

Disclaimer: This is only a quote from the popular TV show "Seinfeld." It was not meant to be disrespectful to Drake University, which is a top notch institution. Please call off the dogs of negative rep.

Regarding the Des Moines ragester or the Locust St Liar. It used to be that you could NOT work at the ragester er liar at any position of import, unless you went to the eiu journalism school!

Its just that simple folks! The ragester er liar has always catered to and will always cater to the boys at eiu!
