    Best route to Columbia

We have a few going from Des Moines and two from M'town. Do we take I35 down from D.M. or go down 63?

From Des Moines I would go 163 to Ottumwa then South on 63 all the way to Columbia. But thats just me.

Take 63. I've gone I35 as well and find 63 a much better ride.

    Re: Best route to Columbia

That is what was suggested on a different thread as well. I've heard it's not a bad trip since the majority of it is 4 lane now using that route. Even if you hit some towns, you will make up for it in distance...

Hwy 63. 4 lane from Kirksville all the way to Columbia (actually all the way to the Ozarks)

163 to 63. Only way to go, really.

63 is showing 4:10 from Ames on my Garmin. Much easier drive than it used to be.

Walking on water is easy. Just do it in December when it's frozen.

Ive taken 135 and then east on 36 in mizzou I think it is. Seemed to work ok.

Ive taken the 63 route too.

That route is pretty much a majority 4 lane the entire trip if memory serves me well

    Re: Best route to Columbia

Hwy 163/Hwy 63 route is 4 lane from Des Moines to Ottumwa, and then it's 4-lane again from Kirksville to Columbia. There is about 50 miles of 2-lane including stop lights at Kirksville and Macon. However, it is definitely the fastest way.

    Re: Best route to Columbia

Macon and Kirksville take a SHOCKINGLY long time to drive through considering there populations.

I have to imagine that someday there will be a bypass...that would be incredible. Nonetheless, I would still take 63 over the interstate.

Thanks all. Sounds like 63 is the consensus and we'll meet the Des Moines crew in Ottumwa or Osky.

Do not do this. It sucks. This was a part of my infamous drive from Atlanta to Ames spring game.
