    MBB: Early comparisons

    Through 3 games this year we've scored 88, 72 and 90...averaging 83.

    2006 - 69, 68, 56 - 64 avg (3-0)
    2007 - 58, 67, 65 - 63 avg (2-1)
    2008 - 61, 67, 79 - 69 avg (3-0)
    2009 - 88, 72, 90 - 83 avg (3-0)

    We have given up 68, 50 and 70 - 62 avg.

    2006 - 61, 40, 54 - 51 avg
    2007 - 44, 57, 56 - 52 avg
    2008 - 58, 55, 61 - 58 avg
    2009 - 68, 50, 70 - 62 avg

    Margin of victory...

    2006 - 13
    2007 - 11
    2008 - 11
    2009 - 21

In all but just a couple games in the previous 3 years, the starters had to play the entire way in these early games in order to win. Have not been forced to do that this season.

The competition level has been similar. I'm just amazed (and thrilled) by the drastic changes this year. And I'm totally fine with giving up a few more points while scoring a lot more. Greg said the style of play would change this year to cater to the athletes and thus far, he's been true to that.

It's very early and there is much left to prove, but I'm high on this team and can't wait to be playing for something meaningful in March.

Looks like we need to tighten up the defense for little bit :)

I know you're joking, but I think you're right. We're not always going to be able to run teams out of the gym. We're letting too many guys drive right around us, and our defensive rebounding hasn't been good, until the last half last night.

However, this offense can nullify some of the defensive woes!

I couldn't agree more. Drake shouldn't have scored more than 60 on us last night in my opinion.

I had this thought as well. But one thing you have to remember is that our offense is running a little more up-tempo this year than last year, meaning the other team will most likely score more as well by the fact that they will have more scoring oppertunities.

They made a handful of threes that nobody has any business making, or else they're down around 55-58ish.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
Make this one for the ages!

Maybe if we were trying to slow down the game similar to the past three years. We are playing a much faster game this year...direct result will be that the defense scores more points. We are still winning games by 20+ and that is all that matters.

this. They were pretty lucky to be within 20.

Still? We were not doing that before. But we're mostly on the same page. Faster tempo will give the other team more chances to score. But we're giving ourselves more chances to by better ball movement and better offensive rebounding.

Remember in the previous seasons, anytime we shot the ball pretty much everyone immediately had to run back on defense because our only hope was to stop the other team and maybe score enough to win? It does not look like we're forced to do that as much this season, giving ourselves more 2nd chance opportunities. I have not looked yet, but I'd bet our offensive rebound numbers are up so far from previous seasons.

I'm completely fine with giving up a few more points if we're scoring more and at a higher rate than we're increasing what we give up. So far that's held true.

Our style of play will most likely flux based on the opponent and - I can expect our defense to improve once the newer guys learn where they need to be, JVB gets in better shape and - the bigger thing - we get Dendy back.

    Re: MBB: Early comparisons

I didn't mean "still" like we have been doing it for years, just meant the games this year.

To be my own devils advocate, last year, through the first 3 games, we were averaging 46.7% on FG while holding opponents to 33.5%, this year we are averaging 50.6%, while holding opponents to 38.5%. So our opponents FG% has increased some this year...

    Re: MBB: Early comparisons

Didn't everyone on the team play this year for at least a few minutes? That means more garbage buckets at the end also usually. In a way the years are not directly comparable because of who played those minutes. It could have been a lot better statistically but the players needed experience.

I don't need stinking numbers to illustrate the difference between last year and this year.
