    This is uh, interesting

It is a time lapse of county by county unemployment. It is like creeping death or something.

And yet fast food places and the like are hiring all of the time. Amazing. When it comes to feeding your family, hang up your pride for a bit.

watch the northern VA/DC area... even when the rest of the eastern seaboard goes purple, the beltway area stays a lighter color. I lived there earlier this year, and of course the economy there was still solid, no wonder that place is so out of touch with the rest of the country.

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

Wow - who'd of thought you'd have it so good living in Nebraska?

    That animation is downright depressing.

And who the hell is living in the north Alaska tundra unemployed?

I've never been on unemployment or worked in the fast food industry.... but I am betting you would get as much on an unemployment check as you would working alongside the Iowa Grads in the fast food business, plus you'd have more time to find a real job.

Definitely agree with your point about getting work where you can, but I don't think most laid off people have much to gain by working for $7 an hour at Burger King (at least while they are still getting unemployoment).

LOL for the Iowa comment. I agree with you on the unemployment check part. Once that has dried up they need to do what they have to.

Alaska, despite its frontier economy, frequently has high unemployment. Many people move there expecting good jobs ins the oil industry, or see that TV show with the fishermen getting paid tens of thousands for a couple months gathering cages of crabs. If you go there without skills, the best you will do for a job is canning fish or worse. Don't forget that most of the land is owned by the gov't, but thats another matter.

    Re: This is uh, interesting

I was unemployed for about 7 months back in '02/'03. If you have any sort of lifestyle at all (meaning car or house payments) unemployment doesn't go far. If it weren't for my severance and my live-in girlfriend at the time, I wouldn't have made it.

Not sure what to say about the "lower" paying jobs. I was fast approaching that point, but was very reluctant to doing so. I had a buddy who put me to work from time to time in his drywall business. And was underastanding when I had an interview or something. But alot of places might not be. And trying to find more gainful employment when you're holding down another job or two - is incredibly challenging.

Not like Wells Fargo or Principal are going to interview you at 7PM or look favorably when you show in that McD's uniform.

But ya, eventually you got to do what you have to do.

I think Alaska citizens also get a good sized yearly check from the state government via the oil companies. Never could figure that out since they're taking the oil from federal land.
