Odd punt return/drop from the CU game

Almost forgot about this...the punt that Lenz muffed against CU on Saturday. The odd thing with it (other than the drop), was the entire CU coverage team was headed toward another one of our players that was back on the put, on along the ISU sidelines. I guess I wasn't looking specifically at either guy - were we going for some sort of "fake-'em-out" on that play?

If so, it worked perfectly (other than the drop, of course) as Lenz had a ton of open field in front of him.

First time I've seen something like that, ISU or otherwise.

I had binoculars on the other guy and followed him just like the CU defense.

I saw the play unfold and thought "OH MY THIS COULD GO TO THE HOUSE" and then he droppped it. I thought it was hilarious that the only CU player not along our sideline was the punter as he actually knew where he kicked the ball and I'm sure he was probably yelling his *** off to get somebody over there!

    Yes, that was odd.

With the wind conditions, we used two punt returners, Lenz and O'Connell (IIRC), which was smart.

On that punt, the entire CU cover team went running to their left and Lenz was standing wide open on their right -- waiting for the ball. I remember thinking, wtf? Then he muffs it and compounds the mistake by running backwards. It was a lost opportunity.

well...when you don't get any rush on the punter with the extra guy up there you might as well put him back to block or provide a diversion.

Re: Odd punt return/drop from the CU game

Yeah that was a weird play. I don't know if that was because the other guy was waving for a fair catch, but not a single CU player was headed towards Lenz until he muffed which turned out to be a good thing. Maybe Lenz was faked out too.

From the title I thought you were going to ask about Arnaud's punt in the 4th qtr. I couldn't see what happened did a CU guy muff that and then they recovered or what happened?

To me it looked like the CU guy thought it was an incomplete pass and kind of swiped at the ball as it came to him.

Re: Odd punt return/drop from the CU game

The other return man acted like he caught the ball and took off running. They did it at least twice but that punt was the one where it really worked. Teams won't know which man is the one receiving the ball in the future. The other return guy can block the equivalent of 4 guys with a good fake.

Oh yea, another weird one. Why did Arnaud punt with his left leg?

I think it hit a CU player, but they recovered.

In the 4th qtr when ARob broke that run for the first down I thought it was classy of him to take a knee. We didn't want to run up the score on CU and make them look bad.

I think you are missing this --->

Pretty sure ARob went down to ensure he would stay inbounds and keep the clock running (once the chains were set), not an effort to not run up the score.

Re: Odd punt return/drop from the CU game

A question on punt returns like this, I know a player can signal for fair catch and then intentionally not catch it.

But if there are 2 returners back for the punt, and one signals for fair catch and the other does not, can the one who did not signal still catch it and run, or does one player calling fair catch effectively account for the whole team?

Ha, that's one thing to call it. Looked like a three year old girl not wanting to do something and sat on her butt out of protest. Loved it as well.

Sorry, I did foret the jimlad. I understand not wanting to go out of bounds, but I wish he would have stuck his head in there for a couple more yards.

No. A fair catch signaled by anyone on the receiving team is considered a fair catch. If one signals fair catch and the other catches it and runs its a penalty just like if there is only one guy back there and he signals fair catch and then runs with it.
