    Tailgating in Columbia

What's the pregame atmosphere like down there?
ANyone know if we need to bring red cups along?
    Grass lots or paved?
    Where are clone fans tailgating?

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

    Re: Tailgating in Columbia

When I was there in 2005, we ended up tailgating on the roof of a parking garage. It could be worse, I guess, but it was no JT. As I recall there were no container restrictions other than no glass.

    Re: Tailgating in Columbia

It is a lot bigger than what you'll see in Ames but it isn't concentrated in one area. The tailgating areas literally extend up to 1-2 miles from the stadium. All the good lots are pay lots and gravel/concrete. Parking garages are for the lazy/cheap but lots of people will tailgate, there too. There just isn't enough space for 80,000+ tailgaters for everyone to be comfortable.

If you want to tailgate outside in an actual lot, your best bet would be the frat houses or lot X at the corner of stadium and college.

    Re: Tailgating in Columbia

it is really not that great of a tailgate atmosphere. all the lots are paved and even the closest lot is somewhat of a walk. It is certainly no JTS in terms of atmosphere and enjoyability.

that said, i think my group will be in lot X.

Um, the big donor lot surrounds the stadium. Is 50 feet to the gate not close enough for you? Another huge lot starts about 300 yards just to east of the stadium. There is lots of tailgating around the stadium but you aren't going to be privy to that unless you go tailgate with some of the bigger boosters.

The tailgate atmosphere is not great for ISU games, true. You'd have to come to columbia when the fans are excited. The NU game is usually a good one. For the bigger games, they estimate that over 110,000 people participate in the tailgating. The few times I have been to JTS, I have seen nothing of the sorts.

    Re: Tailgating in Columbia

So is there a public lot that ISU fans will be tailgating in?

    Re: Tailgating in Columbia

In 2005 we tailgated in a large gravel, public lot down the hill from the stadium. It wasn't as wild as Ames, but it was pretty fun.

I have heard a rumor that the lot has been shut down, but I'm not sure how accurate it is.

That was reactor and it has been shut down. Well, it is still there but it is now a donor lot so you have to have a donor pass for that level to park there.

It was a whole lot more fun before it became a gravel lot. It used to just be a grassy field that was one huge student party on gamedays. It started getting out of hand so they gravelled it over and turned it into a pay lot. Student activity started getting bad again so they just went donor with it and did away with students in that area.

We parked across the highway from the stadium, in the area near the hospital. Large public lot, porta pots, grass strips in the middle. We parked and cooked and set up inthe grass. Other ISUers were there, and it was a short walk to the stadium. The rowdy area was down the hill, about a mile away, and the lots nearest the stadium are all reserved. We had a good time.

Then clearly you've been coming to the wrong games. Lol, maybe you should come when we're "excited". But seriously, every year, regardless of the product on the field, we are very well-known for our tailgating scene.

    True and Valiant

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

That's too bad. Where do students/public (non-donors) tailgate now?

Anywhere and everywhere they can find a spot. All of campus has essentially turned into potential tailgating areas. It is kinda crappy for those not wanting to pay to park.

That is a pay lot now. I think anyone can park there but there is a price. I'd assume it is around $15.
