    Christmas Lights

Starting to put lights up on the house (not lighting them yet...just trying to beat the cold and snow). It seems as though lights are very expensive this year...all types!

Anyone know of a good place to buy them that is cheap...or even online? If the price was right I would order them and just hold them until next year. The LED lights are certainly cool...but expensive. I like the "old school" look of the C9 type bulbs though...

If you want them for next year, wait till after the season and get them at 75+% off.

I haven't looked or tried, but I believe that Menards or Lowes (really think it was Menards) had a promo where they'd give you a couple bucks off (thinking $3) for each strand of old lights you recycled. Working or not.

Not sure how that works out price-wise. Just an FYI.

I have done that in the past...but they are usually very picked over! The color that seems to last on the shelves the longest are the purple lights...purple? For Christmas?

Really I guess I was just wondering if anyone knew of an online site that sold lights on the cheap. Where is a monoprice.com for Christmas lights???

    Re: Christmas Lights

Probably 6-7 years ago we bought some frosted gold colored mini lights from target. I really like how they look, but I can't find gold colored lights anywhere anymore. Really makes it hard to fill out our cyclone themed room.

    Re: Christmas Lights

The past couple years I have tried doing red and gold lights alternating every other bush for the 6 in front of my house. Ironically it is VERY hard to find the gold lights any more. You'd think it would be a pretty common color for Christmas right?

Did mine 2 weeks ago. It is along way up on that roof. Not doing in in the cold, snow or wind. But then again, being on a roof does not bother me

    Re: Christmas Lights

I'm not a tightwad, but I would find it painful to buy lights this time of year knowing the very same ones will be 50-75% off the day after Christmas. If you must, buy a few to get you by this year, and then stock up post-holidays. You will be surprised how much is left.

More of CCG's helpful Xmas decorating ideas (opinion only):
    * going all white lights is really cool….like….circa 1992. Add some color.
    * blinking strings can work in very limited situations. Worse offense: String of lights that is outlining a roofline and the blinking is not in unison. Same for a large tree or bush. Either make the entire string(s) blink together or forego the blinking feature to avoid the trailer park look.
    * icicle lights are really, really cool….like….circa 2000. Time to move on. If you simply can't do without, make sure they go the complete length of the roofline.

OK….I know many are now thinking, "he says he's not a 'tightwad', but he definitely is uptight!"

Yeah….I've been accused of that once or twice in my life before. ;)

    Merry Christmas!

    Re: Christmas Lights

Look into LED. On the surface, they seem more expensive, but so far, it's one of the few strands I've had that has lasted over 3 years outdoors.

This has nothing to do with energy savings. It just seems I'm not spending hours trying to find that one bulb to replace.
