    McDermott talks about scholarships

Here's an interesting article where McDermott talks about his agreement with Alex Thompson and his plans for the team.

I like Pollard's comments at the end of the article.

I like McIntosh's statement that he doesn't think anyone is leaving. McDermott is the man to take us up and up, and this article shows that he thinks 3 steps ahead.

I am so looking forward to the depth ISU will have next year! I can't remember having this much depth in years. It will definitely allow GMac much more flexibility when game planning and esp. when foul trouble arises.

By the way, thanks to Jessan Gray for all of his efforts and contributions over the past two years!

    Re: McDermott talks about scholarships

Totally agree. Pollard's comments at the end of the article are exactly how we want our program to continue to rise, on the court/field and off. The open-ness and friendlyness these players have shown over the years to the thousand of young fans the meet starts with the coach.

I'll 2nd Nedrick's comments on Jessen - many, many thank you's Jessen for what you've done for our program.:Basketball:

Also, Nedrick - you're missing one man's picture in your sig.

    Re: McDermott talks about scholarships

I understand the need for all the banter on this but we all know that GMac already knows that someone won't make grades or he's picked at least one person to show the door to, ala Tim Floyd and any number of players. "you can stay and sit, but you aren't going to play, or I can help you find a good fit for you where you can compete for time." Mean spirited or brutally honest? regardless of your opinion it'll get us where we need to go faster doing it that way, just as Floyd showed, and if I worked for JP Hatchet where my job is clearly on the line based on my performance, I'd be putting my ducks in a row faster rather than slower too.

mkcrawford, your right. Fennelly needs to be in that sigature photo too. Frankly you change it to "people' an add the vb coach too. Oh yeah and add the OU gymnastics coach.

I was going to suggest this, but then I thought maybe Nedrick is featuring the coaches that JP brought in under his watch. I love Fennelly- that guy is nice to a fault.

    Re: McDermott talks about scholarships

I would guess the average D1 team loses at least 2-3 players per year. Existing guys transfer or new players don't qualify. Very few D1 programs have 13 players on scholarship each year. Most likely we will have 11-12 scholarship players next year incuding Thompson.

Isn't your job on the line based on performance, I know that mine is. You can do a bad job and continue to get raises, no wonder you must have liked McCarney so much. I am sorry that we have an AD with expectations, little brother, wait......NO I AM NOT. It is about time that we have expectations, that is how we will get better.

And all of the new coaches will be given opportunities to fail, but if they do they will be held accountable. The days of spin, and the lowering of expectations are over, FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah it made me kind of skeptical when they were talking about getting together after break and figuring out for sure where everyone stands. I guess this could mean nothing too, but I thought it sounded like somebody could be up in the air. Hopefully I'm wrong.

If this is true I hope I won't have to watch two players (Hayes and Kimbro) pushed out of the program again leading their teams to the tourney while ISU is sitting home.

I think it sounds more like a business that D-I basketball is. If you're giving a player a schollie to play, and they don't pan out the way you thought they would, the coach has the opportunity to "pull" the schollie in order to open up a spot for a new recruit. Thompson knew/understood the circumstances when he signed with ISU, and it seems like he may be without a free ride next year. If he's fine with that, more power to GMac. He can coach anybody, and when he gets his own recruits in, I think we can go deep into the NCAA tourney.

    Re: McDermott talks about scholarships

If Thompson has to give up his scholarship, and is in complete agreence to it; then this guy has a lot of heart. That is a huge decision to take on the responsiblity of paying for one year of college. I vote him Team Caption.
