    Them Crooked Vultures CD

I'm in class right now so I can't post the best review in the world...but I did get ahold of this cd the other day. I would try to make a comparison to any of the other groups that the members come from but I really can't because his band sounds like absolutely nothing I have ever heard before. You can hear the influences of the members other bands, but this new music doesn't pinpoint any one in particular. So far, after one listen through, I am incredibly impresed. I'm not a fan of QOTSA but I did like Kyuss a bit...the lead singer (whose name escapes me) absolutely kills it on this album and it great. I am most impressed by John Paul Jones though. After all these years, he has not lost an ounce of talent. I'll post a better review when I get home, but I just want to get some folks excited because I think this cd has most definitely lived up to the hype surrounding it.

you can hear a lot of the Zeppelin influence and at times Josh Homme sounds a lot like jack bruce from Cream. i'm liking it so far.

I think it's closer to QOTSA than Zep for sure. Josh Homme has a signature sound, and everything he's involved with carries it's stamp. This is one HELL of a good album, and I think it's one of the best albums this year. It's in heavy rotation for me right now.

Also, I've been wearing out Lucero's "1372 Overton Park". I think it might be the best album of the year.

Al, I think I have read 3 different threads where you name a new "best album of the year". Each album out does the last one or do you just have a lot of favorites? Haha

for me there are 2 songs that sound very Zep., Spinning in Daffodils and Reptiles.

but you're right it for sure have Homme's signature to it.

As the year progresses, my opinion changes. I know I called Pearl Jam's "Backspacer" the album of the year, and didn't expect that to change. Then I heard "1372 Overton Park". I admit I occasionally call these types of things a little prematurely. I should probably qualify those types of statements with a "thus far".

Al, you seem to have decent taste in music...what do you think about Manchester Orchestras new cd, if you've heard it. At first I thought it was meh at best...after really listening to the music and the lyrics, damn this is a great cd!

I really like Manchester Orchestra. I have not listened to the entire new album. I will have to give it a chance. I do not like their slower songs as much as the ones with with more emotion.

To be honest, I'm not familiar. I'll have to youtube them. How would you describe them?

Manchester Orchestra = My Morning Jacket for girls who smell better.

I listened to some of their stuff on youtube after the last post, and I can see this description.

They're catchy as hell (much more so than MMJ) but definitely "wear their influences on their sleeves". This is a nice way of saying it comes off mimicky. Not bad by any stretch, but not mind blowing either. Not sure if I'd go out and get the album, but pleasant.
