Would Brian Kelly leave for Notre Dame?

It seems like the obvious answer would be "yes", but a buddy and I were talking about this the other night. Notre Dame is a traditional power, and they'll pay him a ton of $, but on the other hand, the expectations sky rocket. At Cincinnati, he can build a dynasty, have a good crack at the National title, play for BCS games every year, and if he has an off year, no big deal. At Notre Dame, the entire fanbase is up his *** every minute of every day.

It appears that Rich Rod made a big mistake career wise leaving a program on the verge of dynasty at WVU to jump into the fray at Michigan, and he's likely going to be out of a job in a year or two. Does Kelly look at that, look at the hell Charlie Weis is going through, wait for Cincy to offer him some more $ and stay put in favor of what will essentially be a lifetime contract, in a fertile recruiting area, with reasonable fan expectations, or does he risk it for a little bigger spotlight and some more dough? Look at Kirk Ferentz, he's had plenty of opportunities to jump to bigger programs/the NFL, but he's stayed at Iowa where he has lower pressure, and a good paying gig.

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.

I would say that he would take it, so he could stick it to Michigan and Michigan State year in and year out...

I say it's a shot in the dark at best. Hawkins went from successful to what he is at CU. You could also look at it from the other side and how Ferentz went from Maine to iowa and has had lots of success. IMO, it's impossible to tell if someone will be good at the next level until they go out and do it.

Notre Dame is now, and always will be a better job than Cincinnati.

    The answer is Yes.

Cincinnati won't pay Kirk Ferentz money.

Re: Would Brian Kelly leave for Notre Dame?

A lot of these coaches refer to the ND job as the highest in College Football. Kind of like a lot of people say that about Kentucky in MBB. (Although I think UCLA has the best tradition there.) They (ND) have the most tradition in FB ever. He would have all the media attention.....if he wants to be in that spotlight..and he would have a big challenge to get them in the Top 10 again. I see him leaving for it, I really do. I mean- Cincy is not on TV like the Irish. NBC...come on....pretty sweet gig.

Also, you have to look at the other side of the coin. What if he is the one that saves ND football? He will be all over the news and will be the next U. Meyer-P. Carrol, etc....

I think he stays at Cincy. The Big East is now big time and Cincy should have the money to get him anything he wants, and he's in the middle of a great recruiting area. Anybody know if the Kelly at Oregon is Brian's brother? They look alike.

Re: Would Brian Kelly leave for Notre Dame?

But If he stayed at Cincy he could be in the BCS almost every year since the confrenece is down a little right now and he has a strangle hold on it. So you could say that he would like to stay and dominate the confrence for the forseable future

Maybe Cincy can join the Little Eleven.

I think ND has deeper pockets than Cincy...not even close.

Re: Would Brian Kelly leave for Notre Dame?

My point has more to do with the unreasonable expectations at Notre Dame. The way they run coaches out, I can absolutely see why I guy in Kelly's position would look at what he has (stranglehold on a BCS conference, plenty of $, fertile recruiting ground, worship by the fanbase) and a place that has a boat load of tradition, TONS of $, but has a ridiculous fanbase that demands national titles every year, and says "you know what, I'm sitting pretty good right where I am".

Re: Would Brian Kelly leave for Notre Dame?

This year, I would actually like our Clones to play ND in the Bowl game. I hope we can beat Missouri and lock in the Insight Bowl. There is an opening there for ND to be in that bowl, right? That would be huge money and a great opponet to play for bowl game. But we got to beat the Tigers Saturday for us to lock in that bowl game.

Most likely, they will be without their head coach too at that point.

You guys are forgetting top level athletes and coaches do not consider failure an option or a possibility. These guys are as competitive and confident as any you will ever encounter.

But Cincy has those TERRIBLE "cat-rip" looking pants that they wear.....The Irish have the some of the best uni's in college FB. I would leave just for that reason alone.

Come on, those were hard to look at the other night in the West Virginia game. Absolutly horrible.
