Cyclones Open New Season with 80-40 Win

AMES, Iowa – After celebrating last season’s run to the NCAA Elite Eight, the 24th-ranked Iowa State women’s basketball team got the 2009-10 campaign underway with an 80-40 win over Florida Atlantic Sunday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.

Freshman center Anna Prins blazed the way for the Cyclones, scoring a game-high 20 points, including going 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. She also pulled down five rebounds for the Cyclones. Senior Alison Lacey came close to a double-double with 11 points and nine assists. With her 11 points, she moved into a tie for 15th place on the Iowa State career scoring chart with 1,158 points. Denae Stuckey led the squad on the glass with six rebounds.

Chelsea Poppens also finished with 17 points, after picking up two early fouls and sitting most of the first half. Jessica Knurick led Florida Atlantic with 12 points and seven rebounds.

“I told the players before the game that we were dropping the Elite Eight banner and recognizing a special team and a special group of people,” ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. “I asked them to give an effort that that team would have expected and they did great. Alison Lacey really set the tone early.”

After a rough start from beyond the arc in the first half, the Cyclones finished with nine three-pointers for the contest, shooting 43 percent from long range. ISU shot 52 percent from the field for the contest and the Cyclones outrebounded Florida Atlantic 39-29. The ISU defense held the Owls to 27.5 percent shooting from the field and 26.1 percent from beyond the arc.

It really didn't seem the team was winning by that much.

Coach was trying different line-ups including 5 guards for a few minutes in the second half. With the team we were playing, if you were an outsider and didn't know the team. ISU guards have good size and it really didn't seem odd looking at it.

Got to love the Twister Sisters! Good game. Rough start, but way to finish!!!

Actually, one of the more exciting things for me was to see Cole knock down a couple of perimeter shots. Even though Danae made one, she still doesn't look comfortable out there or at the free throw line. I'm afraid it's turning into a mental hurdle - if it wasn't already.

Aside, Danae is so fun to watch. I love how quick she is. She is what we need defensively.

As to Cole--I think she hesitates too much when she makes a shot. There is always a pause there, and she needs to eliminate that to become a great shooter. Other than that, Cole has a pretty shot.

Danae may currently have a rough looking shot, but she adds so much spark. The group around me at the game yesterday called her a firecracker. Always exploding at the bball. I would like to know how many times she hit the floor making plays.

Yes, I noticed that too, and think that five-guard lineup might be an interesting possibility at certain times. Actually, we could field a pretty good team with Aus, Bolte, Cole, Stuckey, and Williams: it would be quick, fast (they are not quite the same, in my view), and sharp on defense, but they would still have two six-footers. I also noticed, as many others probably did, that Aus drove down into the post or received the ball there and got some layups against smaller defenders. She did not always make them, but it shows a configuration on the court that could yield points in the future.

We have seen Aus play some in the post before. She also backs down her defenders a lot and always finds a way to get the ball in the hoop.
