Will There be a Policy Change?

The question is should there be a change in the amount of access high school players have to ISU facilities? There are positives and negatives - we have seen the negative - the positive would have been a huge payoff. As far as I'm concerned this open access should still go on.

This interesting question is will this open access to a certain local player be cut off now?

    It better be.

With this whole situation having taken place, now would be a good time to shut down the open access to uncommitted players. No need to help increase the skill level of already talented players if we're not going to get the payoff in the end.

It'd better be! There is no reason at this point that he should continue to get that access.

My question is, do you think we'll see any kind of strain on he and Doug's relationship?

I hope they keep facilities open. Sooner or later we will pick up a good local recruit by an open door policy. I hope high school players are always made to feel welcome at Iowa State University.

So, when does sooner or later come? More later than sooner is my guess.

The facilities are paid for by ISU fans, not North Carolina, Kansas or Duke fans. To have our facilities, and in turn, the ISU fans, used like this by HB should be the wake up call needed to close the doors to the outsiders. If you want in, you can commit to Iowa State.

I think you are right but I do think there has to be some limits put on it. How that should be structured - I don't know but there should be some limits and those limits should be communicated to all involved.

Re: Will There be a Policy Change?

    Very simple to handle.
They should be open to recruits prior to their making a decision on and signing a LOI.

Prior to signing ISU welcomes prospective players and recruits. That is keeping an open door policy up to the point that they are players for another school.

Afterwards, they are playing for another school and ISU has every right to limit access to their facilitties.

If you want to fine-tune the policy:
    - make it so that if they commit to Iowa or an out of state program they cannot use the facilities.
-Or that they have to be playing as a guest of a current team member.
    -Or various other options.

You realize our team probably got better by having Barnes play there as much as he did?

Don't care. Our guys made him better and it seems he's benefiting more from it than our guys are.

Re: Will There be a Policy Change?

Would closing access when players sing a LOI encourage players to just delay signing their letter until spring then? A verbal commitment can change at any time sadly, and a letter of intent can be signed fairly late...I haven't thought up what a good policy should be, friday's decision just still stings. There's probably pros and cons to all sides and our coaching staff will do what they feel is best for Iowa State.

So some of you dont want to open our facilities to 15, 16 and 17 year old schoolkids beacuse you fear that one day they wont commit to us? Let's build a fortress around the campus and put up snipers ready to strike in case an outsider is seen on our campus.

I would guess that an attitude like that would be a fairly big turn off for a local kid who would otherwise be able to use the facilities. Is it worth losing recruits just so you don't open the facility to kids who might not end up signing here? If we let a kid use the practice facility and he signs else where what have we lost? But what could we have gained if he would have signed also? Seems like a risk/reward thing, the rewards could be huge, but there will always be risks, I just think the risks are much lower.

Re: Will There be a Policy Change?

3Tand GoAGig, in my opinion, you are correct about prior to a decision we shoudl be open.

With the exception of a couple of posters, I do not think prior to signing is a big issue to anyone. Almost everyone should and we would be idiots not to encourage potential recruits to use the facilities. The more open and encouraging we are the better, it is called recruitment.

The key question is about after signing a LOI or verbal.

Even after a kid has made his choice, I can also make the argument ISU is better off for having our kids continue to play with a top recruit and that is a good solid argument.

However, as a donor, I can make another argument.

When you make major decisions on life direction, it is inevitable that they both open new doors, as well as close doors. That is why you have to accept the consequences of decisions.

Completely agree with this - we just need some set rules, policy, guidelines to handle this in the future.
