    Wes Eikmeier's state tourney update...

Wes's team crushed Deshler 61-39 in the first round of the state tourney. I'm not sure how Wes did in the game.

Re: Wes Eikmeier's state tourney update...

    From the Lincoln Journal Star:
    http://journalstar.com/articles/2007...8175577379.txt

Archbishop Bergan 61, Deshler 39: Seventh-ranked Deshler came out in a box-and-one defense in the first round of the Class C-2 state tournament at North Star and played right into third-ranked Archbishop Bergan’s hands.

The Dragons’ hopes were to slow down the Knights’ star guard, Wes Eikmeier, and succeeded to a degree — but the rest of Bergan’s players made them pay in a 61-39 romp. The win sends Bergan (19-4) into a 7 p.m. semifinal today at Pershing Center against top-ranked Ponca (24-1), which rolled past unranked Weeping Water 84-63.

Eikmeier led all scorers with 19 points, but that’s 7.5 points under his season average, and he made just 8 of 19 field-goal attempts. The rest of the Knights more than picked up the slack, going 16-of-28 from the field (57.1 percent). Bergan led 25-4 in the first minute of the second quarter with just six points from its star and never looked back.

“We thought they’d come out and run a junk defense on us, but we’ve seen that all year,” said Bergan coach Chris Paulson. “Our kids enjoy playing against that because it gives some very good basketball players open looks. Wes didn’t play very well tonight, and we still won by 22. I feel pretty good about that.”

The Knights had five players other than Eikmeier score at least five points, led by guard Brian Liekhus, who scored 13 points and made 3 of 4 three-point goals. The Dragons (21-3) were led by Jens Scholl’s 14 points and Landon Freitag’s 11. Freitag added a game-high 10 rebounds.
