Question for Jon Miller or Chris Williams

Let me start by saying that i'm not a basketball fan. I could care less about the game on all levels. I'm sure alot of you are probably saying, that's a typical Nebraska fan for ya.

That said, it seems like once about every ten years or so, a true stud prospect from Iowa comes along and every time, said true stud goes elsewhere.

LaFrentz, Heinrich, Collison, and now Barnes all turn down the home state schools to play for Roy Williams.

I realize that it's hard not to say no to the best of the best. But what does the Iowa schools have to do to keep these stud players in state, whether it be Iowa St. or Iowa?

Re: Question for Jon Miller or Chris Williams

Right now, I think ISU has a lot more momentum than Iowa does. So the next kids that come along, I think ISU may have a leg up unless the kids are lifelong Iowa fans, and even then, they may not want to play in Lick's style. I think there are probably some style questions with ISU, too.

ISU has a great practice facility right now, and that is a necessity. Iowa just started building theirs, adjacent to their arena, and it won't be done til the summer of 2011.

This season is HUGE for ISU...they have to show kids that they are on the right track. Iowa is going to have to do that next year, and the year after.

In the end, if the two programs were anywhere near where they were a decade ago, things would be different.

Had Floyd not left, ISU would have gotten Hinrich. Had Tom Davis not been a lame duck, Iowa would have gotten Collison. Who knows what might be different right now, given those factors.

Both programs just have to start winning again and getting back to the NCAA tournament.

Solid points by Jon. I really think that Greg has a foundation built for future success here in Ames.

Even if he loses Brackins this year, which he will, Dendy will only get better offensively. DG is coming back along with pretty much the entire backcourt. Ejim is a nice addition and supposedly DeMarcus Phillips is a newer version of Mike Taylor.

Not to mention that loaded 2012 class coming up...

Your next "prime" Iowa prospect is Roosevelt's Peter Jok, who is only a freshman. He'll be up there in HB's fame level when it's all said and done.

Let's hope he sides with the good guys.

    Hopefully without the turnovers.

Has the coaching staff started contacting Jok? What else needs to be done to make sure another one doesn't get out of the state?

Hinrich bolted to Kansas when Floyd went to the Bulls. IMHO, Collison would have ended up in Ames, too, had Floyd stuck around. I remember the day Floyd took off very vividly, I was at the QT on SE 14th when it came on the radio (my then gf/now wife had just flown out of DSM for six months away from home, double bad day for me...)

Now, the LE fiasco caused so much damage, but not related to any of these "top" recruits. He just lost some solid players like Shane Power for pushing them too hard...

Collison would have went to IOwa if Alford would have been IC a year earlier.

    Collison was a hawk fan.

Re: Question for Jon Miller or Chris Williams

Great question in light of today's events.

My question would be - especially directed at these players who have been "fans" of these programs as a child and young adults, what do you need to play for teams like Iowa and ISU. If you need a competitive team, why continue to go else where? Look at Iowa State this year, this team has the potential to do a lot of special things - the future is looking bright. Brighter than ever in fact.

So instead of being the building block that this teams needs to continue to grow, you instead choose to go elsewhere? You complain of not having the competitive team that you want to play with, yet make no effort to set the trend to make this team competitive - expecting someone else to pick up the pieces and fill in the puzzle.

    Chris,

Surprised you don't consider Marcus Paige a prime prospect.

Re: Question for Jon Miller or Chris Williams

Honestly, I don't think there will ever be anything either school can do. Football or basketball, when the really big boys want someone they get them. Short of winning multiple national championships, Iowa State will never be able to go head to head with Duke/North Carolina/Kansas and beat them for a recruit. Everything was stacked in their favor on this one, and they were still unable to do it. Fact of life. What the Iowa State's of the world have to learn to do is win with less. They've proven it can be done in the past, my hope is that McDermott can do it more consistently going forward.

So it seems that coaching is the issue with not getting these players...
