    Twas the Night Before Signing

    Ok, be nice. This is my first attempt at something like this. Here goes:

    'Twas the night before Signing Day, and all throughout Ames,

    Cyclone fans were restless, thinking of signing HB, Brackins year 3, and the CU bowl-clinching game;

    While all three were important, the first matter at hand,

    Was hoping for Barnes, the top recruit in the land;

    Roy, Coach K, Self and the rest,

    Had given their pitches, had tried courting Harrison best;

    First came the Tarheels, they have such tradition,

    For Barnes not to consider, it’d be an omission;

    The business school was wonderful, the weather was grand,
    Harrison even got to shake Dean Smith’s hand;

    The home visits were nice, seeing Jordan and Worthy was great,

    But after Hinrich and Collison, had Roy run out of Iowa bait?

    Next came Coach K, with his new Olympic Gold Medal,

It was the Blue Devils success in the 90’s that he had to peddle;

    Duke’s track record of putting players in the pros,
    Was something that sat right in front of Harrison’s nose;

    Becoming a Dukie, Vitale’s next man crush he’d be,
    But a Business School in Durham is what Barnes did not see;

    Next came the Jayhawks, and their coach Bill Self,
    Their program was close, and definitely top shelf;

    Lawrence was nice, in driving distance for mom,
    To see her boy Harrison, it wouldn’t take long;

    Self sold the program, fans chanted Rock Chalk,
    They impressed Harrison, they thought he’d not balk;

    But Harrison thought Allen Fieldhouse just wasn’t for him,
    Because after all, we all know, it just another gym;

    UCLA tried to recruit HB as best as they could,
    They even scheduled a dinner with the Wizard of Westwood;

    California is beautiful, with women and sun,
    HB saw himself as a Bruin, the fast break he would run;

    But focus was a must, Harrison did have a plan,
    It would be just three years, then diploma in hand;

    The Sooners pushed hard to bring him to Norman,
    Their offense with Harrison at the 2 would be stormin’;

    Capel, their coach, a former Duke great,
    He was young, a great leader, and with Barnes could relate;

    The campus was great, OU had a nice feel,
    But after the Sampson debacle, the program felt not to be keel;

    Finally, the Cyclones, the hometown team on the mend,
    Harrison’s first offer, the Cyclones did lend;

    After 3 years of rebuilding and heartache from mourners,
    It seemed that the Cyclones had just started turning the corner;

    A community of Cyclone players and familiar faces and friends,
    Had seen Harrison through the past years to this end;

    But did the Cyclones have the clout of the legend programs of past,
    A former Elite Eight and Big 12 Champion seemed at half-mast;

    McDermott said to Harrison, “You’ll be a legend, I’m sure,”
    HB would make the Cyclones of Now, the Cyclones that Were;

    So obviously Harrison had a big decision to make,
    With all the pressure on the young man, you’d think his psyche would break;

    But Barnes was strong-willed, a trait from his mother,
    He’d keep his decision tight lipped, unlike the ohers;

    Signing day came, the 13th of November,
    Has their been such hype ever around Ames? ... I can’t remember;

    The press conference began, with Judge speaking first,
    The crowd in the gym chomping at the bit and ready to burst;

    Then Harrison came to the podium, the crowd crazy with anticipation,
    Soon his decision would be made known to the nation;

    Without smoke and mirrors and a great big production,
    Harrison started with his list of 6, and began making reductions;

    First came the Sooners, Oklahoma wasn’t home,
    Then came the Bruins, going so far west was too big an unknown;

    Kansas fell next because it wasn’t a fit,
    And he wasn’t buying any of Coach K’s recruitment sales skit;

    Finally, his choices were paired down to two,
    The Cardinal and Gold and Carolina Blue;

    Harrison thanked his recruiters, it’d been quite a ride,
    Now it came time to pick final sides;

    The Tarheels had lore, tradition, and fame,
    Most importantly to Harrison, they’d won the big game;

    Roy knows how to win, how to build up a winner,
    As a Tarheel, with Jordan, Harrison could shoot the breeze over dinner;

    However, the glamour and glory of the Tarheels seemed slightly faded,
    Compared to Hilton Magic, and how he’d been elated;

    He’d grown up to see the Cyclones at their peak,
    Before the program had tires that leaked;

    Barnes had bonded with Coach Mac and put his trust in Greg,
    Coach Mac wanted the best for Harrison, he never did beg;

    To the team, Harrison was already an honorary mate,
    The pickup games at State Gym had always gone late;

    He’d be a hometown hero, grow his own Ames lore,
    If he’d come be a Cyclone, worship from fans was in store;

    He’d been a Cyclone already, Ames High in the name,
    And by name, without “Little”, a Cyclone he’d remain;

    So then Harrison let it be known,
    He’d create his own Hilton Magic, as a Cyclone;

    The national media shocked, friends and family in tears,
    ISU had landed their biggest recruit in all of its years;

    Cyclone Nation was charged, the fan base elated,
    ISU fans in streets, HB celebrated;

    The 2009 Cyclones looked to be better,
    But the future was also so bright, HB were the letters;

    To Cyclone fans, visions of Hoiberg, Tinsley, Fizer, and Grayer,
    Election day is tomorrow and Ames has a new Mayor.

    Re: Twas the Night Before Signing

    VERY nice work. Props to you. When Barnes signs with the Cyclones, I'm putting "Ames has a new Mayor" in my signature!

    True and Valiant

    I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.

    Good job, and very brave of you. When I saw the title and first part of the thread (and how long it was) , I was thinking that if it wasn't very good, you'd be ridiculed without mercy, but you certainly shouldn't be.
