    Student suspended for haircut

Dustin Reader, an eighth-grader at Garfield Middle School, received an in-school suspension Monday because of a haircut he received over the weekend in honor of the Cincinnati Bengals. His barber, Chris Campbell of the B Street barbershop Razor Sharp, cut Bengal stripes on the sides of Reader's head and a large capital B on the back to resemble the team's helmet, and on Sunday, he colored his head and scalp to match for the game. The colors were washed out for school on Monday, according to his parents, but he barely got off his bicycle at Garfield when he was sent to his principal's office. Because it's a discipline issue, school officials would not talk about it, but confirmed the suspension was for violating the school's code of conduct, which prohibits "unnaturally colored hair, extreme/distracting makeup, haircuts and hairstyles." -- Dayton Daily News

I support the school. Schools and teachers have to deal with too much of this crap, leaving too little time/energy to actually teach/learn.

maybe they shouldnt have such strict rules so they dont have to spend so much time dealing with it.

Or maybe, crazy thought, people who know what the rules are should just follow them.

Why should the school have anything to say over this kids hair? Its his hair not theirs.

Because obnoxious dress/hair styles distract the rest of the students because they are always making comments about it and looking at it instead of paying attention in class.

    Re: Student suspended for haircut

I could go either way on this one. Rules are rules. There's got to be some sense of what is acceptable and what not.

However, a kid in Ohio with the Bengals haircut probably isn't crossing the line. I promise a school has bigger problems to worry about.

At what point will common sense return to the forefront of our society? I can only hope that it's soon.

I don't see how bengal stripes in a kids hair from Ohio are extremely distracting. Now if they were wolverine stripes than that may be a problem.

I was constantly being distracted at school because I was at school so should we just get rid of that?

Have you ever tried to teach middle school kids!? My guess is no. ANYTHING we can do to lower the number of 'distractions' is a good thing.

This is a hard age group to work with. My guess is that when they registered the student that the parent also signed a contract saying they would follow a handbook, which they did not follow.

Way too much 'oh I don't like this rule so my kid can do what he wants' going around.

You do realize that the guy you are quoting is around 19, and said his parents were "gay" for not letting him donate plasma about 6 months ago, right?
