ISU’s Stephens to Play in 85th East-West Shrine Game

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State center Reggie Stephens has accepted an invitation to play in the 85th East-West Shrine Game. The game will be held Jan. 23, 2010, in Orlando, Fla., kicking off at 3 p.m. EST.

Stephens joins an elite list of football greats, such as John Elway, Tom Brady, Brett Favre, and 62 NFL Hall of Famers, who have played in the East-West Shrine Game, America’s longest-running college all-star football game.

Stephens played in Iowa State’s game Saturday against Oklahoma State, 11 days after undergoing surgery for appendicitis. He traveled to Texas A&M on Oct. 31 but watched from the sideline in street clothes. Stephens’ absence from the lineup ended a string of 36 straight starts. He has played three positions on the offensive line at ISU.

“Having had the opportunity to coach in the East-West Shrine game, I know what a special event it is,” Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads said. “Reggie will get to play with some of the best football players in the country. The game is great, but the whole week is a special time because of all the things the Shriners do to make it a lifetime memory.

Hall of Famer lineman Ed Bock and end Chuck Heileman were the first Cyclones to play in the game in 1939. Iowa State wide receiver Todd Blythe, linebacker Alvin Bowen and defensive lineman Athyba Rubin represented Iowa State in 2008, the last time ISU players were on a roster for the game.

While the teams are divided by East and West, the players come together for the beneficiary of the event, Shriners Hospitals for Children, an international pediatric specialty health care system.

Well deserved! Reggie has been the glue that held that line together. With a healthy Reggie, we have seen what that line can do.

Good to hear. I love watching these all-star games regardless but it makes it a lot more enjoyable with a Cyclone in the mix.

Am I alone in thinking that Jesse Smith should have been invited?

    Bump.

Griffin mentions in his blog that Reggie will workout at guard during the Shrine Game rather than at center.
