    Recruiting Strategy

As we all know, we will more than likely have at least 3 scholarships available next year. Gilstrap and Vanderbeken are seniors and Brackins will probably be in the NBA. After the short-term idea that Staiger considered leaving after last season, it makes me wonder if this will be his final year. If he leaves, we could potentially have 4 scholarships available. Since we are ISU, we may also lose someone that we aren't expecting.

Melvin Ejim has already committed. It is rumored that DeMarcus Phillips will commit soon. Obviously, if we lose two post players, we need to replace that next year. It sounds like we are working a couple of post players, such as Darrell Haley and there was a Juco player that was mentioned recently (I can't remember his name). I have a couple of questions for those that are in the know.

First of all, what do we do about post players if Barnes commits? That would mean we would have 3 scholarships spoken for (Phillips, Ejim, and Barnes) and no big men.

Next, is Norvell Arnold just a back-up plan if we don't win the Barnes lottery?

My biggest worry is if Barnes doesn't commit then we'll be without a go to guy next year. Any steps forward taken this year would be nullified by another very average year next year. I know its a long way away but the thought of not having Barnes, Gilstrap, or Brackins worries me.

    Re: Recruiting Strategy

If Brackins goes, Gilstrap gets the cold shoulder from the NCAA then I dont see us having a go to guy but I see a host of players that could contribute and make for a solid team. Between DG, Buckley, Lucca, Big Ham, Colvin, we have a lot of good role players that could answer the bell.

We need to get big to play in the Big 12. Our post presence has been poor for years. I say bring in the Football team for reinforcement!!

I'm just wondering about the scholarship situation. If Brackins and Gilstrap both return, we only have one available scholarship for next year.

That's why Phillips is being signed, he'll be counted on to immediately help fill the
potential scoring gap. Others who will have likely improved to the point of potentially becoming double digits scorers next season are Colvin, SC, Garrett, Lucca, Hamilton, Dendy, and maybe Oliver, too.

    This....

I think that is why you add a Phillips to an already crowded backcourt. Scoring will be a different challenge next year, if CB leaves. I can't imagine Gilstrap coming back even with a second year granted by the NCAA. He's 24, and has a family, there has to be some money coming in soon.

So, I think that it is wise to bring in more offensively creative people so we don't revert to the 60 ppg offense that has been so painful to watch over the past three years. Dendy will be counted on to score, and big Ham should be a guy to get double figures on the blocks. It isn't hopeless.

Not...6'9" combo 3/4 with questionable grades is the biggest.

Gilstrap is 22. 2010-2011 will bring it's own challenges but we'll know a lot more when we know who is going to be here and who is not. I'm going to enjoy the ride this year and see how next year is shaping up in June at some CCL games.

Actually our guard court has been our problem under Mcdermott, not our big men.

Before that we had Homan/Vroman except for Morgan's last year when our big men were all new and not good (yet in Jiri's case).
