    second game performances

I continue to be impressed by our frosh and by the improved play of Williams, who today showed a great deal of grit on defense and hit a number of shots. Stuckey was very good on the boards and on defense in general, with steals and disruptions of Minn.'s offensive game. Prins demonstrated a very nice touch at the foul line, important because she is going to be there a lot. Poppens was a fierce competitor like last week and took the ball to the hoop with force. She has to work on her foul shooting, though, because, like Prins, she will get there frequently, I would guess. In general, she is relentless. What do others think?

I'm liking this team. If the shooting doesn't deteriorate drastically against better defenses, we should do well because I think this team has more hustle and muscle than prior teams. I think we have some real warriors out there on the court and sufficient depth to let them loose.

stuckey looks like one of those players that is going to drive other coaches crazy along with poppens who has some amazing footwork and just a nag for getting the ball in the hoop. also how about lacey having 8 assist 2 to and as a team only have 8 tos and the last one was on purpose (shot clock violation) im really liking the way this team looks

Poppens is the hoped for surprise - giving us more points in the paint - diverting attention from Prins. Our front line, instead of a concern may be a strength. Oddly, there is concern about the 2 guard. Is there enough scoring threat there to keep a double off Lacey? To play three guards? We saw some more scoring from the other guards yesterday - good sign.

    Re: second game performances

I was impressed that they really pressed to have the newcomers to most of the scoring, smart coaching. Williams had a few amazing no look assists. Prins reminds me a lot of Welle with her footwork, good shooting, and soft hands, but need to strengthen up in the weight room a little, work on being a little lower in her stances(less upright), and work on rebounding. Poppens is a beast and not the typical finesse type player people are used to seeing from ISU, and that toughness is a welcome addition that will probably surprise a few teams this year. She kind of reminds me of Mellissa Jones at Baylor, tough as nails. I was a little disappointed with Schroll last night, but I think she just didn't find a rythym in the game.

Overall, I am not as worried about this season as I was at the start.

You raise an interesting question about how many guards we might play. I was thinking along these lines: if we had to go to a quicker, smaller lineup, we could play four guards, with Bolte playing the four instead of the three, which I believe she has the height and strength to do. The other three guards could be Aus, Williams, and either Denae or Cole. That would give us a speedy, good ball-handling, good defensive lineup without being too short, given that along with whomever was playing the five, you would still have two additional six-footers in Aus and Bolte. And who can worry about rebounders when Denae can grab 13 for us, as she did Sunday.
You would probably only play it this way under certain circumstances, but it is fun to think about the possibilities, right?

    Re: second game performances

After watching the exhibition games, I'm very excited to see how this season turns out. Plenty of things to improve, but the newcomers seem to be pretty comfortable in their positions. They seem to really work hard fo each and every ball -- fits well with the veterans on the team.

I agree about Schroll, hopefully just a rough game. It didn't seem as though she was as focused or determined as exhibition game number one.

I'm feeling an exciting basketball season!
