    Mac apps?

Ok, I made the plunge, I got a 15" MacBook pro for my work laptop.

I have vmware fusion running on it, so I have all my normal windows apps running there. Are there any mac apps that I cannot live without? I tend to just boot it up and go right into windows right now.

    Re: Mac apps?

I've been a converted Mac user for, I don't know, 4 or 5 years? No, there are no mac programs you cannot live without that I have found yet.

Are there any good remote desktop apps? That is one thing I tend to use a lot.

    Re: Mac apps?

So why get a Mac if you spend all your time running windows apps?

    Re: Mac apps?

    Where to begin....

    Download these apps! Must haves!
Adium - All in one chat client
Firefox - I use this over Safari but that's just my preference
Office for Mac - Using Word, Excel and Powerpoint for mac
Pixelmator or Photoshop - If you do any photo editing or you can use the editor in iPhoto
Cyberduck - If you do any website work or need an ftp client, this is the one
Growl - Great background app for notifications
Little Snitch - Good for tracking apps that call out to a server somewhere...You can restrict who can and can't call out
Handbrake - If you want to rip DVD's or convert video files, this is your app

A lot of the built in apps are very power as well:

Quicktime X - Built in screenshots, screen videos?, and integrate your webcam for FREE
iMovie - "Basic" video editing that is actually VERY powerful. Blows the socks off Windows Movie Maker
iPhoto - Love this for organizing photos
Time Machine - Good backup software built into the mac

Some preference panel things I have extras of:
Cameras - manages all of your cameras connected
Connect360 - Connect media to your Xbox
Geektool - Powerful desktop data display application
iStat Menus - Puts your CPU, RAM, HDD, and other stats in your top menu bar
MultiClutch - If you have a new MacBook with a multitouch pad, you can customize what the swipes do for particular apps. Very useful.
Secrets - Customize pretty much ANYTHING on your mac. Very good tweak tool.

Let me know if you have any questions about these apps, but these are the ones I use regularly!

    Re: Mac apps?

OS X has desktop sharing built in as well. It's in your System Preferences under "Sharing." It suits my needs fine, but before that I used an app called "Chicken of the VNC."

TextWrangler is a great app for simple, yet very powerful text editing. It's the free version of its big brother BBEdit.

Aperture or Lightroom are more advanced photo editing apps if you need something more powerful than iPhoto. There are free trials of both still, I believe.

You can also get a bunch of licensed shareware for little or no cost by keeping track of MacHeist each year. link They've got 6 free apps they're giving away right now and will probably have a decent bundle of cheap shareware soon (along with an entertaining way to earn more free shareware).

    Re: Mac apps?

Ok, I need more work on this thing. I am back to using my old laptop, the mac was just ticking me off way too much.
