It is not fair to Alex Thompson

AT will be one of our best bigs next year (may be close to Brakin and Jiri), and he doesnot get a scholarship? That is simply not fair to him. If he works hard and projected to be in the rotation next year (everything indicated that he will), at least reward him a scholarship.

I know AT has no choice now because he can't transfer to another school, but we should not take advantage of his situation, right?

It's not taking advantage of his situation (if this is actually true), it's just doing what we told him all along we would do if we had to. He didn't have to agree to those terms in the first place...we just would have been going after another big this year.

Re: It is not fail to Alex Thompson

He made an agreement when he came in that he would only get a schollie if it wasn't needed elsewhere. Obviously we need it elsewhere. It's not a matter of anybody taking advantage of anybody. Obviously he would have been a key player at Iowa this year and next so he made the decision completely on his own.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Was Alex on scholarship this year?

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.

Alex is getting his money back by not being coached by Alford.

I am sure he is on academic scholarship so it really doesn't matter when it comes down to it that he isn't on athletic scholarship, he is here, he came here knowing the situation, if he has a problem he can go play at DMACC or something, but I don't think he does!

Way to stick up for someone who is going to do big things for ISU.

Re: It is not fail to Alex Thompson

Why all the hype for a career 2.1 ppg scorer that shoots 31% from the field??? I wish the best for him and I hope he does well but we are making this kid into the make or break piece of the program when i don't think he will be much of an impact player

For the 1,000 time!!! AT will not be on academic scholarship!! It counts the same as an athletic. We are only given 13.

Agreed, otherwise universities could get away with getting more athletes by giving them a scholarship for the department of their choice.

Re: It is not fail to Alex Thompson

He was originally told he would not be on schollie this year, but the way things broke he got one, so really he is just a year late because we got what we needed next year and with the late start couldn't this year. It's a wash and if something opens(academics/ someone leaving because of PT) up it will be his. I sure wish I had to only pay 1 year!

Re: It is not fair to Alex Thompson

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I agree with Cydkar and think AT will be on scholarship next year, regardless of what people are saying. I could be totally wrong but it's my gut feeling. I still think that next year's roster, as it stands now, will not be the roster the team starts the season with. I think there will be attrition for whatever reason and possibly even another player signed yet before next season. These comments are just my opinion and not necessarily based on anything particular I have heard from inside sources, so take it for what it's worth.

Agreed. I'm sure he's fine with it. HE's from Ames, so its not like he traveled long and far to hear this news. He'll be fine as a walk on and I can't wait to see him contribute.
