Gary Parrish - CBS College BB Analyst

I'm not generally a big fan of Gary Parrish, largely because he seems to write most about Memphis, Kentucky, Kansas bias (basically he only writes about the notable teams) and he focuses a lot on certain individuals (like John Wall), but I must say that I'm happy to see a little respect for the Big XII in his preseason rankings.

With the release of the Big Ten today as his number 2 conference, that leaves only the Big XII remaining (to be previewed tomorrow). I can't remember the last time the Big XII was rated the strongest conference in men's b-ball. Can anyone else?

It'll be interesting to see where he ranks ISU in his Big XII preview tomorrow. With ISU's difficult non-conference schedule and the nature of the Big XII this year, it's possible we could sneak-in to the Tourney with a 7-9 conference and 12-3 nonconference record this year (19 -12 before the Big XII Tourney) if we win the right games. Anybody else think so?

I think the days of teams with sub .500 conference records making the NCAA Tournament are over...I think we need to be above .500 in conference play, unless we have significant non-conference wins, like against Cal and/or Duke.

Big 12 was probably the best conference in 08.

It's not impossible to make the tourny at 19-12, but you certainly need some big noteable wins and very few, if any, bad losses. We better be safe and get .500 or above in conference and do pretty well in the non-conf.

It all depends these days - the record by itself is meaningless. Depends who we beat, depends what the conference standings look like, depends what the rest of the other conferences do.

Gary Parrish is great - he updates his blog 2x a day, he talks about much more than just memphis or kansas.

That's interesting to see, although I think the general consensus nationwide last year was that the Big East was the best conference and I agree. Considering they got 3 number 1 seeds!!! and I think 7 or 8 teams seeded 6 or lower, it was pretty clear it was the best conference last year. In fact, 4 out of the 8 elite eight teams were from the Big East. Pretty tough to argue with record numbers like that. But this year, it's the Big XII baby!

Very true. It is largely relative, but I still think my hypothetical could come true; we may have one of the (if not the) toughest schedules in ALL of college basketball this year. It's possible.

IMO the Big East gets overblown because of the sheer number of teams. They have 16 teams in that conference, and the bottom teams are just terrible.
