    Steve Alford and God

Found this linked from FireSteveAlford.com of all places. I found it interesting that he equates making fewer mistakes to being right with God. I shudder whenever I hear sports figures talking about God helping them win. Do people really think God is up there worrying about the X's and O's???

“There’s a sign in our locker room that says, ‘Victory favors the team that makes the fewest mistakes.’ I can relate to that spiritually. When you’ve got the full armor of God on, it’s easier to make the right choices. If you put on the armor of God, you have the protection of God with you. If you don’t have it, you’re going to make more mistakes, and you’re not going to be able to handle them as easily."

    Re: Steve Alford and God

I don't want to defend Alford, but you're taking that quote out of context. He's not saying God is helping him win. I will say though that I believe a faith in ****** does more good for you than it does to not have it and having that faith can help you in every day life. I think that is what he's trying to say.

I think it's a solid philosophy. It is possible to have faith and some short-comings as a coach.

Yeah well, ya know, that's just, like uh, your opinion, man.

I'm not bashing anyone here - except Steve.

But anybody find it slightly amusing that a rather liberal - PUBLIC - school like Iowa has a basketball coach promoting faith.

Not that there's anything wrong IMO with what he says, I just find the combination of who's saying it, what he's saying, and where a little funny.

What's the difference between God and Steve Alford?
God doesn't think he's Steve Alford.

I wonder if he proselytizes to his players? That would suck.

I would really love to respond to your post.....except I have not 1/4% of a clue what proselytizes means. The nearest thing I can equate with that is doing exercises with a prostetic limb...

This thread reminded of a Jeff Stilson comedy bit about the losing team blaming God after a loss.

    Re: Steve Alford and God

Now in defense of Alford, I'm not sure he's saying that players that have faith will make fewer mistakes. I think he's saying in life someone with faith will make wiser life choices more often, and will be better equipped to handle situations if an unwise choice is made. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with this, but I just wanted to give my interpretation of what Alford was saying.

As far as an employee of a public university discussing their own faith, I have no problem with that. (And I consider myself to be liberal.) Whether someone is Christian, Muslim, or Jewish, I see no problem in a public expression of how their faith effects their life. The only thing a public university shouldn't do is promote a specific faith as an institution.

    Re: Steve Alford and God

Perhaps we need others that are not afraid to profess their faith in a public forum. Screw political correctness and the like. I live in one nation, under God and I'm not afraid to admit that.

I may think Alford is a boner, but I have no problems with him expressing his Christian faith. I wish more leaders would hold themselves up to that standard.

    Re: Steve Alford and God

Steve's got a track record of using his faith inappropriately. Remember how he sicced his church on Pierre Pierce's first vic to get her to reconsider what happened? The guy's just rotten to the core.
