    My son swings/bats left handed?

Question for you parents out there - my 2 year old son is obviously right handed. Eat's, throws..everything right handed. My issue is when he swings a golf club and or a bat he grips the bat/club left handed and he swings left handed.

I guess I've heard of guys doing this but I wondered if anyone on here has any experience with it. I kind of wonder if I should just let nature be or try and teach him to swing right handed.

    Thoughts?

Let him bat lefty, have had a few guys come through my team that do that. Best not to push one way over another. AND might even get a switch hitter after he gets comfortable one way.

Let him be, not only is it easier to teach in mirror image but it's better to hit left handed... Then wait untill he is about 8 and teach him to hit both

You should have him examined. =) Kidding. Let him be. If he is a natural swinging the bat left, let him do it. He can always try to learn both directions, but ultimately its whatever gives him the best control and power.

My brother is that way. He's an engineer and could bench press 450 pounds in his prime, so didn't seem to hurt him at all. I read somewhere ambidextrous people tend to have a higher perecentage of genius's so I think I'd leave him alone!

I know a few people that swing lefty but do everything else righty. I don't think it is all that uncommon. 2 of the guys I know are cousins and both turned out to be very good golfers.

If you teach him to catch, you may have a future Joe Mauer on your hands.

Re: My son swings/bats left handed?

I do everything right handed, except play Hockey, and swing a bat lefty. I was convinced to play Golf Righty. Didn't help my golf game.... It is not uncommon, and not a big deal. Could definitely learn to be ambidextrous.

Re: My son swings/bats left handed?

In high school we had 2 left handers whose parents taught them to bat right handed when they were young. My coach would almost say weekly "I should turn your parents in for child abuse" HA, never force the kid when it comes to things like this. It is how they learn and develop all those fine little motor skills. It is going to be a fun time for you :)

This would also be the case with a hockey stick. Supposedly this is the correct way according to sports camps I went to as a kid as your dominant hand should be at the base of the club, bat, stick because it controls the object more. My dad is the same way and I thought it was weird, also made it hard for him to teach me, that mimic stuff didnt work for me in baseball. If I were you I would teach him to throw left handed.

I'm the same way. Write, throw, etc right handed but I golf and bat left handed. Not a big deal.

Start teaching him to throw left handed junk and he will be a multi-millionaire in the majors someday.

This is good news. Being right-hand dominant also makes you right-eye dominant. If you're holding the bat left-handed your right eye is closest to the pitcher which means you see whats coming sooner. Nurture the right fielding and left batting.

Re: My son swings/bats left handed?

I wouldn't be too worried about it. He'll develop best with whatever he's comfortable with. My son throws a football or baseball left handed, but golfs and writes with his right hand. He hits a baseball similarly either way, but seems to have more power and more comfort batting righty.
