No. 8 Cyclones Stun No. 2 Texas, 3-2

AMES, Iowa – No. 8 Iowa State handed No. 2 Texas its first loss of the season with 3-2 (22-25, 25-22, 25-15, 20-25, 15-12) win Wednesday night at Hilton Coliseum, running its winning streak to 11 matches. Texas is the highest-ranked opponent Iowa State has defeated in the history of the program.

"I have to think this is our best home win, that is for sure,” ISU head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. "This is big. But we've still got a lot of matches left. We can't stop here. We need to keep going.”

Johnson-Lynch credited the mental toughness of the Cyclones, who have tied a school record with its 12th Big 12 win of the season.

"We've got a very mentally tough team. We stayed very composed and that made them a little uncomfortable. Their outsides couldn't quite figure out where they could hit to score. They are a great team with a lot of weapons. (Texas) actually changed their lineup in the fourth game. We forced them to have to make a lot of changes."

Iowa State (20-3, 12-2 Big 12) held the Longhorns (18-1, 13-1) to a season-low .189 hitting percentage and fought off a career-high 27 kills from All-American Destinee Hooker to beat the Longhorns for just the third time in school history.

The Cyclones were led by Victoria Henson’s 15 kills, while Rachel Hockaday added 13 and Jamie Straube finished with 11. Debbie Stadick finished with nine kills and Kelsey Petersen had seven in the Cyclones’ first win over the Longhorns since 2005.

Defensively the Cyclones were everywhere, digging 92 balls, including a career-high 25 from Hockaday. Ashley Mass added 23 digs and Kaylee Manns recorded her 62nd career double-double with 47 assists and 15 digs. Caitlin Mahoney added 15 digs.

So, are you (Chris) and CycloneFanatic going to post duplicates of all press releases?

Not trying to be an ***, just curious.

This may be the best team in any sport that we have ever had. I know there were some good basketball teams in the past, but this team has beaten teams and indicated that they have a VERY legitimate shot at a National Championship. I think that with our current coaching situations around all sports we are in good shape. Yes, McDermott has not necessarily proven himself yet, but keep in mind all of the terrible luck he has had. If he has a good year, I think our coaching situation in Bball, football, Volleyball and wrestling are about as good as we could ask for. Sorry for hijacking.

There are a dozen national champion teams that would disagree with you.

This was easily the best game I've seen at hilton. I didn't think we were going to make it to a 5th set. It was one of the most impressive wins I've ever seen. Hooker was playing out of her mind the majority of the night too. Great win girls!

They are a great team, but as for legitimate national championship squad??? Im not sure, but prove me wrong. I've seen highlights from one PS game and they seem like twice the team Texas is. Would have to be quite an upset.

Several wrestling teams would disagree, 1987 specifically (Bill Kelly (ISU) pins Brad Penrith (Iowa) with 30 second left in the match on the way to winning the national championship and ending Iowa's streak of 9 straight national championships.)

    Just saying.

Re: No. 8 Cyclones Stun No. 2 Texas, 3-2

That was easily the most amazing game I have ever seen at Hilton. I've been following Cyclone volleyball for five years now. I remember the first game that Christy coached at ISU. I never imagined we would reach this point.

By the way, the announced attendance of 3,800 or whatever it was is a total load of crap. I've never seen attendance underestimated before, but there were clearly WELL over 5,000 people there, and they were all Cyclones. There was fewer than 30 Longhorn fans in the entire arena.

I rushed the court along with everybody else- it's hard not to- and just stood there for half an hour afterwards. I got to talk to Kaylee Mans and congratulate her on already having an amazing senior year. I got to talk to CJL and thank her for everything she's doing here. And after that? I just kind of stood on the court with a few other long-term volleyball-addict students, absorbing the scoreboard. I didn't have a pen for autographs, I didn't have a camera for pictures. All I had was that scoreboard, and the people around me, and that's all I needed. Congratulations, Spikelones.

    True and Valiant

I also remember a game with Kansas when Cy (wore a huge suit then) went out to center field, squatted, and "pooped" a couple of chickens that had been dyed blue then chased them around.
