    Amtrak to Duke / ISU

I waited to post about this until after the bus trip was either full or cancelled, but a few of us are planning on taking the California Zephyr in to Chicago for the Duke vs. ISU game at the United Center.

The train leaves from Osceola at 8:20 on Wednesday and arrives at 3PM at Union Station. The return train leaves at 2PM and arrives at Osceola at 8 PM the following day.

    It's $106 roundtrip.

I'm not posting this to debate the feasibility or convenience of taking the train. There may be delays, it takes longer to get there than by car and it is more expensive. I'm not coordinating anything but please give it some consideration. I'd love to mingle with some CycloneFanatics on the ride in there.

For what it's worth, I went Amtrak to the Colorado football game last year. Nothing but high praise for the relaxing trip that is a train ride.

If I was wanting to do this "Vegas" style, do you think I could sleep that night at the train station?

Is this time correct? I'm wondering why a 350 - 400 mile trip would take 30 hours, seems a little excessive. I'm all for partying with fellow Cyclones, and I love train rides but no way would I be excited about that. That's just way too much travel time for something that you could drive in less than 6 hours.

If that is not correct and it arrives at 8 am the following day, it might be fun it. Just make sure you've got a bar car or at least a room to party in.

I think the author was trying to say that the return train leaves at 2pm and arrives in Iowa at 8pm, and he was stating that this part of the journey occurs the day after the Duke/ISU game is played.

Re: Amtrak to Duke / ISU

I took the Zephyer out to Chicago for a weekend of Cubs games and had a blast. You can bring your own booze and beer on the train and drink it in the lounge car even though they say you cant. On the way out some ISU grads were sitting with us and had a cooler full of beer that we split so on the way back we repaid the favor. The beer comes in cans so its easy to have your own and the conductors never mess with you.

Also bring your own food as the meals can be expensive on the train.

Re: Amtrak to Duke / ISU

I completely recommend the train for travel. It's smooth, worry-free riding without all the security headaches of an airplane. Plus, there's much more leg room on a train and often the seats next to you won't even have passengers in them! I've thoroughly enjoyed my train trips in the past.

The main drawback is time. It will take a few hours longer than a flight from Des Moines to O'Hare if you count door-to-door. However, if you're with friends, it would definitely be the way to go. Plus, you'll arrive at Union Station in Chicago and can easily hop on the bus or train to get to the United Center for the game.

We did Amtrak to Chicago earlier this summer too, and it's a fun trip especially when kids are involved. Much easier to entertain them than driving.

    Cyclone
Iowa State became the Cyclones after they leveled Northwestern in 1895. As the Chicago Tribune (9/29/1895) noted:
    'Struck by a Cyclone
It Comes from Iowa and Devastates Evanston Town'

Have you tried Kayak or Hotwire? Hotels start at $29.

Why go home? There will be plenty of partying to do in Chi-town once we beat Duke!!
We are staying at the Red Roof Inn. Its only like $85/ room (for 2 beds) thru Priceline and its right downtown. Great location. I think single bed rooms are even cheaper. Red Roof is the cheapest hotel that still has good location.

Well if my math is correct 8 guys in one room brings that cost to about $11/person. Stewo can join you guys and bring it down to $10/person. I joke, but do know a group of guys that went on a road trip to South Padre one year for spring break. They took a van and stopped half way through on the way there and again on the way back and all 8 of them stayed in a room with just 2 beds both times to save some cash. I did not ask any more questions after I heard that!
